Default A blast from the past.

At Historicon I ran into long time DBA player who who has been out of the game for quite a while. Julie Stannoch made quite an impression on Phil in the late 1990's as noted by the acknowledgement in the book. Here is a pic of the the two USA Americans

"We owe special thanks to two Americans, Julie Ann Stannoch, whose repeated elephant trampling of Phil’s armies provided the motive for him to start this revision, and Bob Beattie, who organised the majority of the testing..."

Julie was responsible for the Teen Tournament. She told me that she like to play the game, "but not always against old men all the time." Now she is as old as some of those men were, then. She played as a partner with Phil in one of the first BB Doubles.

She is now "almost 30," getting married in October, teaching nursing at Penn State. She gets in a game sometime, but the groom to be is not a historical gamer but "does some fantasy." A great thrill to see her again.

Default Is Julie Stannoch related to Mark Stannoch ?

Hi --
Back in the late 1970's and early 1980's I gamed with a pair of brothers named Stannoch -- I worked with Mark at the World HQ of a major financial institution. We gamed at a store in Bayonne, NJ called Boots & Saddles, and then later on in Mark's garage. I lost touch with him many years ago, and would like to reconnect. If Julie is his daughter (or niece) could you pass on my message to her?

She should move to Spain then. Around here the average age of the players is late 20's - early 30's.

Cheers,
Xavi

Julie's father has a company that makes and sells model airplanes for games. Was your friend doing that back then?

So Julie was something like 13-15 when she tramped Phil to dust. Repeatedly

So, you are telling us that we got a revision of DBA because a teenager stomped a grown up veteran wargamer to dust in the 90's? Odd and does not tell a lot about Phil's generalmanship lol

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I seem to recall a report that Phil is going to change some of the Elephant rules in the next edition (3.0?) because he got some of his Spear elements trampled by some Elephants recently.

Julie's dad is John Stanoch of Blue Sky Game Works. If he is one of the brothers you knew, perhaps you can reach him through his company's web site, at http://blueskygameworks.com/index.html.

Good luck.

Hey, speaking as one of the Creepy Old Guys (tm) Julie used to beat regularly, you guys get your own hot former DBA playing nurse!

BTW, congratulations to Spain on winning the World Cup, even though cousin Fernando was not up to form.

Good luck.

My friend Mark Stannoch did indeed have a brother John, although at that time, if memory serves me correctly, John was a Doctor of Dentistry. Perhaps that explains the Nursing....in any event I'll fire off an email to the address you suggest to see....thank you very much Rob and Bob....

English Open verses Classical Indian, lost seven (yes seven) elements in one turn from memory.
