Default LoTR Maufacturers

Couple of questions...
I am thinking of branching out into fantasy gaming and as I have been a long time fan thought i'd begin with a LotR (or anything Tolkien'ish) army or three.
Firstly, can anyone recommend a manufacturer/retailer?
Do they come in 15mm metal?
Is 15mm the recommended size?
What are the popular fantasy rule sets used?

I have always used 15mm metal figures and tended to steer clear of anything in plastic. Not sure why. Metal just feels right.

Thanks in advance...

There are a few companies making nice Fantasy Miniatures. Eureka Miniatures make some nice miniatures, albeit in 18mm, which appear to have been inspired by the movies.

A list of some of the other companies can be found here:

There may be others...

Some historicals can also be pressed into service and some time ago had considered using Normans for my Gondorian troops and Vikings for my Roharim.

If you want to stick with DBA/HoTT, Luke Ueda-Sarson's site is good site to visit. This is a link to the DBM page but each list also includes a DBA list and HoTT list at the bottom of each army list. I am not sure which version of DBA, if it matters:

There is also a link to just some Hott list at the bottom of the page. I'm not sure if these are different in anyway.

David Kuijt's site has list available for LoTR DBA as well and they can be found here:
http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/~kuijt/orcs/TolkeinDBA.html

I am sure there are other list and links that I have missed but these were the main two I was looking at.

I hope this helps.

It's completely not what you want I believe from your post, but I thought I would mention that Games workshop do a great range of LoTR figs in 25mm - mostly plastic.

The also do rules etc. although I have never played them.

The site listed above: http://sites.google.com/site/15mmfantasy/ is the most extensive listing of 15mm fantasy figs that I know of but they do not have Khurasan Miniatures listed who are in the process of releasing some really nice looking orcs. I've recently started using some of the splinted light miniature orcs as they mix real well with the old Demon World orcs.

For the human nations there are an endless list of various historical figs that you can use. If you want your men of Gondor to look like late Romans then they can. I prefer Byzantium looking figs for Gondor. Rohan is easy to put together with assorted mounted vikings and other mounted dark age types with round shields. Huns, mongols etc can be chosen from to make easterlings, various middle eastern types for Haradrim etc.

Here is a link to several pages of photos of some of my LotR minis with all the human types made up of various historical figs: http://www.fanaticus.org/DBA/HOTT/PelennorFields.pdf

As far as rules go if you already know how to play dba then you can't go wrong with HotT.

Great period to game, enjoy.

Paul,

Brilliant photos!
I can see how Byzantines would work for the men of Gondor. I like that idea.

Is there anything Khurasan isn't doing!

Cheers,

Barry
