Thumbs up DBN, AWI, & Nobody knows where The Swamp Fox's at

Eons ago, the Wonderful World of Disney ran a series staring Leslie Nielsen on American Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox). That show got me hooked on the American Revolution in the Southern colonies (I even went to Marion Military Institute as a teen). Over the years I got to tour a lot of the battlefields: Cowpens, Guilford court House, Eutaw Springs; and began collecting histories of the campaign (see my books).

The war in the South was really a civil war with partisans waging guerrilla war (see The Patriot with Mel Gibson) and large Tory units fighting alongside the British. Wargaming it was more difficult, I never hit on a sets of rules or line of figures that really sold me. The DBA came along with its progeny, DBA-HX, DBN & DBAWI. Tony Barr's website carries Chris Johnson's DBAWI
with lots of OBs for the Southern campaign. I like DBN and its very basic attrition system which does away with those countless recoils we sometimes run into. KISR UK has produced a $4 set of DBN-AWI which does the trick for me.

Having solved the rules problem, I was again scratching my head over figures. I just didn't want to go 15mm/25mm because I think they fail to capture the feel of whole units on the field (which is why I use DBN in 6mm for Napoleonics). I looked at Irregular Minaitures 6mm & Baccus but wasn't sold there either. I'm more & more convinced that Pendraken 10mm may be the way to go.

Anyway, I thought I'd share my interest and thoughts with you and welcome your ideas & comments. C'ya in Lancaster!

Ultimately you have to go for what makes you happy....I'm odd in that I like to base my Line units four to a base, Provincial and Militia three to a base (to help differentiate them. I use primarily Musket Miniatures in 15mm...I'm pretty happy with them...I've so far only did a few re-basings so far.

I also prefer the Southern Campaigns...used to dress the part, have a musket over the mantle to prove it.

It looks like you will have to write that Wiki entry on "The Swamp Fox". I have a faint memory of having seen some of it.. John S.
