Default 1/72 plastic Romans

So I've noticed on the plastic forums that there's now a lot of imperial romans on the market. Hat, Caesar, Zvezda by my count. I currently have the hat ones, and I must admit I don't really like their poses. The look of the caesar ones looks quite good but I haven't seen a review yet.

Are there any I've missed? Which ones do people like the best for basing DBA style?

Chris

Hullo
As a collector of plastic figures I recommend the following website for reviews of plastic figures:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Index.htm
From your post it is not clear what period you are looking for Romans for?
HaT makes:
* Polybian Romans
* Early Imperial Romans
* Late Romans (some releases still to come)
See:
http://www.hat.com/
I prefer HaT's Polybian Romans to their figures for historically later periods.
See:
http://www.hat.com/Set8018P.html
and
http://www.hat.com/Curr/Bx8017P.html
for an example of what they look like when well painted.
However this is a subjective opinion based mainly on the "mix" of sets & poses. For Marian Romans try:
Italeri Romans
For reviews see:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Italeri.html
6021 - Roman Infantry and
6028 - Roman Cavalry
Note that there are fewer poses in the Italeri sets than the HaT Polybian Roman sets.
For alternative Early Imperial Romans see the review of Esci 224 - Roman Legion
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Esci.html
which has been re-released by Italeri.
For alternative Republican Romans and Early Imperial Romans see:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Zvezda.html
specifically Zvezda
8034 - Republican Roman Infantry
8038 - Republican Roman Cavalry
and
8043 - Roman Imperial Legionaries
I only have the Republican Romans. I really like these figures.
For an alternative to HaT Late Imperial Romans see the review of MiniArt
72012 - Roman Infantry reviewed at:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/MiniArt.html
I do not have these yet. Given the variety of equipment (weapons, shields, armour) used by the Late Imperial Roman Army I intend to mix these with HaT Late Imperial Romans. Note that I have only commented on sets that I have. For a comprehensive list of what is available for each period see:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/PeriodList.html
Kind Regards
Derek

Also Alanger is about to launch into the 1/72 market with Early Imperial Romans, starting with legionaries. See the picture at Michigan Toy Soldier's online shop http://www.michtoy.com/MTSCnewSite/n...ala720001.html

Oh man! More choices! And they all tend to look better than the poorly posed hat versions! Oh well, guess it can look good for BBDBA!

Thanks for the heads up. I was indeed looking for early imperial. The big rectangular shields simply define Roman for me!

Here's a pic of the italeri ones; they don't paint up too bad.

Hey, is it just me, or do those new Alanger figures look an awful lot like the new Caesar set? Maybe so many EIR's just all seem to run together.
