Talking DBA WW2 Paint advice

I have finally after alot of effort, worked out 4 different DBA WW2 armies

1944-1945 German Panzer Division
1942 (May-Dec) Great Britain & Commonwealth Armour Division
1943-1945 German Fallshirmjager Division
1944-1945 Soviet Union Tank Corps

Now I have made these four armies on a bit of budget so only have the 13 elements each not including any transport [which there is alot of].

In all four armies there is some vehicle cross overs. [eg lend lease for the brits ie Sherman Firefly, while the germans and russians both have "captured" equipment.

Eg, the late war Germans have 2x t-34/76's. whilst the rusians are using captured FH 18/ 150mm artillery.

do I paint these in the blue/grey for the germans, dark green for russians that they normaly used in the eastern front? or do I paint the captured russian tanks bright yellow and covered in german flags etc. [i am sre I read an article that some platoons that had captured british tanks had done this.]

any advice would be great.

Cheers
AJ

I'm sure there is probably anecdotal evidence of German tankers' using captured Soviet equipment here and there, but certainly not on any widespread basis. Given the grand scale of DBA, and WW-2 variants such as this, most "exotics" just factor out.

Just as many of the "funnies" that appear in the DBM lists don't show up in DBA, so too, in DBA-WW2, rareties such as the JS-III, the US Pershing, the German Jagdtiger, and captured vehicles, really, IMHO, don't have a role in the game. I think they are ideal, however, for one-off, low-scale scenarios.

Just my 2-cents' worth.

AJ, If you are doing them as being in German service, then I would paint them in panzer yellow, as this would have probably been the standard attempted to be achieved. Not sure of the year when they made the switch (not having really studied WWII for a good while), but I know in the latter years of he war, Panzer yellow replaced panzer gray as the base color for German vehicles and armor. When I was doing my Normandy campaign stuff I gave the Germans a captured French Renault tank, as was used at La Fiere Bridge, and painted it panzer yellow. My 2 cents anyway, Terry

Paul,

No JS-II's, Perishings, or jagdtigers. this is some what thought out list it has taken me ages to get the right mix of figs from the pre-packed bags CinC stock so we won't have any extra figs left over. here is the Late German list. the desperate defense of Berlin.

Infantry (sf/w) Panzer grenadiers/Opel Blitz
Infantry (sf/w) Panzer grenadiers/Opel Blitz
Infantry (sf/w) Panzer grenadiers/Opel Blitz

Divisional Support:
Recon (aw) Humber Mk IV (captured British AC)

The photos I have of Allied tanks in German service retain the original colour scheme with German crosses added.

Check out any of the popular ranges of books for WW2 or specific types of vehicles and you will see some examples.

I am looking for Colour schemes for :

U.S 2nd Armoured Division [1943-1945]
British 7th Amoured Division [1943]
German Fallschirm-Panzer Division 1 Hermann Göring, [1943-1945]
German 5th Panzer Division [though this could change to the 2nd or 9th dependig on what info we find on them] [1943-1945]

The german paras I have found out have blue grey pants, khaki jacket or camo pattern jacket with grey or green helmets.

which paint would people recommend? either GW paints etc. This will be for 10mm scale figs so nothing that is to thick.

cheers
AJ

I've seen several as well. Note that the German crosses were BIG.

Otherwise, painting schemes can come from Osprey books, the traditional source, or from web pages such as:

We have gone for traditional tanks for each force. [eg germans have german tanks etc.]

I think once we go for the german vs russian that will change as both forces used each others tanks. once we get this range of figs the next lot will be early war Germany invading russia and also the battle for stalingrad.

Not in large numbers. The german tank park, the smaller of the two, was over 3,000 most of the time so you are talking no more than 1 or 2%
