Default Rough?

I'm a little confused by the terrain type "Rough". Is it just intended as a catchall for all sorts of bad going that's not covered by a more specific type? What would be good examples of Rough?

Rocky dry creekbed.

Field of raspberry bushes. If you've ever been picking raspberries in the Pacific Northwest, you'll know what I mean. Unless maybe they should be classed as impassable.

Muddy areas though that might fall under marsh as well but effectively marsh and rough act the same in game terms.

I prefer to think of rough as heavy, thick grass around the fringe of the good going...within which are littered scores of white dimpled slingstones..

Actually, over the years, I tend to model (and think of) rough as broken, rocky ground. Either that or marsh-like swampy patches. Patches of African thorn bushes would make some good rough...as would razor grass of SE Asia..etc.

In battles with Medieval armies, I've modeled rough as ploughed fields, with would be good going except when sodden with rain, in which case they would mire down horses and armored men trying to transverse them. Historical antecedents include Wallace at Sterling and the Catalans who created their own mire in order to defeat the Duke of Athen's knights.

Didn't the catalan company create a whole swamp, actually? Talk about creative use of terrain

I also tend to think about rough as basically good going with some features that make it a pain to traverse: rocky broken ground, small lava stones, bushes, ....

So, as you said, a catchall for bad going.

Cheers,

Xavi

Default Modern Examples of "Rough Terrain"

Shopping malls during holiday weekends.
Sidewalks with heavy, canine traffic &/or chewing gum obstacles.
Historicon dealers' area during open hours (see Shopping Malls).
Crosswalks in Nashville. Actually, a move is underway to reconsider these as rivers as there is a certain chance of elements being seriously disrupted in an attempt to cross.
Lines at Starbucks. These may count as impassable as there is often no discernable movement. Also psiloi are NOT allowed to interpenetrate as there are no "friendly units". All elements subject to being Quick-Killed (see "Monolog by Boring Wit" rule).
