My order of the re-released, 15mm Blood Axe Hawaiians arrived the other day. I like 'em!
They may not be everybody's cup of tea, however. (Remember, I also like Mikes Models figures.) They stand about 16mm high, and,in style, they seem comparable to Peter Pig figures. Most of the packs offer 2-3 different poses. The several command figures are especially impressive and they could be interspersed thru the elements to create even more figure-variety. The outrigger canoes, with crew, will make for some fun eye-candy pieces. As Chris notes in his updated DBA Resource Page this morning, this new (old) range is available in the States from Historifigs http://www.historifigs.com/ , and elsewhere from Tony Barr and East Riding Miniatures http://www.eastridingminiatures.co.uk/ . Hi Paul,
I just ordered a DBA army from Mike at Historifigs, the "Nobles" pack. Great deal, and the shipping was good to Canada too. Have no clue what I am getting, but I would say that if you like them, I can hope that I will like them. Haven't a clue either as to who my Hawaiians are going to scrap with, but I am sure they could be persuaded to fight Early Imperial Romans. (huh?!?) I should add as well that the original casting run is out, and that Mike is re-casting the new batch. Seems they are popular! [ December 17, 2003, 13:04: Message edited by: Grant Dyck ] |

What I'm wondering right now is, how to paint them? I suppose a sortie to the local library should yield some clues, don't you think? |

Hi Paul,
Fall-Con is a must for me next year. I can't believe I managed to miss it this year. A battle for Hawaii would be the highlight of the show, I think. Hula-skirts and leis, with flaming tiki-torches all around, I think. Don't know what they look like yet, but I think either the library or I also have National Geographics going back to 1965ish. If I run across the right article, I will let you know. If all else fails, you could just watch Lilo and Stitch a few time. Let me know what you are doing with yours! Regards, Grant |

Well one thing for sure, if we're going to have lots of Hawaiians running around, we should have a rule for impassable terrain, since a common tactic was forcing your hapless foes off sheer cliffs by advancing a steady wall of pikes.
And given that Hawaiian nobles practiced catching and dodging missiles in flight, perhaps a -1 modifier to missile fire against the command element, just for extra flavor.

Chris,
Oh! Spiffy new SPECIAL rules! I haven't a clue about Hawaiian culture, to be honest. I am going to have to check out my NGs to see if there are any articles. One thing is for sure - they should be unique! -1 on missile fire, eh? Sounds good to me! Grant |

Gee, do you think active volcanos and running molten lava qualify as Bad Going?
Finally, a practical use for those high-school chemistry projects... [ December 18, 2003, 05:44: Message edited by: Paul A. Hannah ] |

I think the idea of you and Grant in hula skirts and leis is bad enough going for most of us.
But we do expect pictures of the miniatures and the battle... |

Well, I received my Hawaiians, and they are very nice! The price was very affordable, making them the least expensive DBA in my collection - about $18 Canadian shipped.
Anyway, here's to hulas and grade 8 volcanoes at Fall-Con, Paul! Grant |

I'll start prepping & priming my Hawaiians after I put the last touches on the Maccabeans I'm finishing now --not to be confused, of course, with macadamias. ![]() [ January 05, 2004, 10:10: Message edited by: Paul A. Hannah ] |
