Default 28mm Tullian Romans

I have converted my 28mm Tullian Roman army into a HOTT army. (My 15mm Tullian Romans will remain a DBA army.)

The line-up I ended up with is:-

1x Spear General (2 points)
2x Riders (4 points)
3x Spear - First Class in hoplite-style panoply (6 points)
4x Spear - Mixed 2nd and 3rd Classes with scuta and less armour (8 points)
1x Horde - Mixed 4th and 5th Classes
1x Beasts - R&R's foster family
1x Lurker - Geese

Can't seem to recall any legends of overt divine intervention on behalf of the Romans before 400BC, so I decided against including Mars or Jupiter. Horatius may have heroically manned the bridge, but I don't think that he was mobile enough to act as a hero in HOTT.

All I had to do was re-base the 4th and 5th classes as one horde, and add a base of wolves and one of geese. All the figures were painted already, but wolves and geese were individually based previously.

For the stronghold I used a city gate (actually the gate from Games Workshop's 'Helms Deep').

The spear are quite effective, particularly against the Greek Myth army. The Tullian Romans seem not to be pip hogs, but might be vulnerable to magicians and aerials with plenty of pips. One week point is the riders, because the temptation can be to throw them forward unsupported.

The big question was whether or not to have a rider general or a spear general. I think that a spear general fits the theme of the army better.

For this army, representing the light troops (either 1x auxilia and 2x psiloi or 3x psiloi in DBA) as a single horde seems to work, given the addition of 1x beast and 1x lurker.

Geese: deadly at both ends.

Huge potential for a striking stronghold if you can find some climbing(ish) Celts.

Might be worth considering deploying the stronghold within a smallish BUA. The Celts won't be at a disadvantage for two reasons; warband are not disadvantaged by bad going; attacking a stronghold is not subject to the bad-going combat penalty. However, it will be possible to deploy the lurkers prototypically.

Edit: When I convert my 28mm Celts to HOTT I will almost certainly include one or more heroes, who would be slowed down by the BUA. Will have to make the BUA surrounding the stronghold small so as not to disadvantage them.

It will suffer a lot against aerials - you don't have anything capable of engaging them directly. Obviously not a requirement, but maybe an issue if they're designed as part of a matched pair.

Great looking army, i really like the geese. Hope to get to see some pictures of them in action.the geese could also be played as water lurkers. -Paul

I think that they will be used mainly against semi-historical opponents. Haven't converted the 28mm Etruscans to HOTT yet. Although I have fielded Celtic HOTT 28mm armies, I have not yet systematically thought through a Celtic army for HOTT.

The time the Tullian Romans fought the Greek Myth army (which was very close in composition to the suggested one) they whipped the floor with it. The Tullian Romans had pips, whereas the Greek Myth army didn't. Artemis never appeared, and the two elements of harpies never got to grips either. Even the magician general was rather hampered in her movement and bespelling.
