Question

Hello Paul,
It was a great pleasure to make your acquaintance at the HMGS/PSW DBA event last weekend, and I wanted to ask about your lovely waterways; I assume the base material was plasticard, such as can be bought at RR shops, correct?

How did you cut it in gentle curves? With a steady hand and an exacto-knife? Also, what material did you use for the beach, and for the water surface (the stuff you said went on like cold cream?)

Thanks in advance for your answers.
Colin

A pleasure meeting and gaming with you too last weekend there in LA. Thanks for the kind words about the Waterways. Like most of my better efforts, I "borrowed" the method to make them from occasional Fanatici, David Sullivan, also of Seattle.

One of these days, I will work up a detailed "how-to" photo-essay for the DBA Resources Page, but if you want to get a head start on getting the supplies you'll need, here's a shopping list:
  • Sheet-styrene, approximately .20 gauge, available at most hobbyshops
  • A rotary cutter (brand name I use is "Olfa"), available at most frabric & craft stores. I don't advise borrowing your spouse's or partner's cutter (if he or she uses it for sewing, as it will quickly dull the blade)
  • "Liquitex" Resin Sand Texture Gel, #6608, 8-oz jar (this is used for the beach or river's edge)
  • "Golden" Gel Medium, Regular Gel (Gloss), #3020-5, 8oz jar (this is the secret weapon that creates that "water" effect, as goes on like cold cream). Both of these last two items are available at better art-supply stores)
Happy shopping.

Paul,
Thanks for your reply. I'll look for these items after I move!
