At long last I have started painting my 15mm Colonial Spanish, which has elements of pike. At the moment I am considering whether to base the pike on 15mm deep bases (as recommended in DBA) or 20mm deep bases (as recommended in DBR). In the DBA-RRR rules it says:-

How would other DBA-RRR players accept opposing armies with the slightly deeper based pikes? |

I don't think it would be a problem either way.
I know of people that have based their pikemen either one way or the other for several of the following reasons. 15mm depth 1. Compatible with DBA/Armati/Humberside 2. Makes for a tighter formation and better "feel" of a dense unit 20mm depth 1. Compatible with DBR/FOW-R 2. Placed figures in two rows (8 figures on a 20mm instead of 4) for greater feel of depth 3. Simplifies recoils with Shot units FWIW, I will place mine on 15mm depth.

Thanks, Tony. I will probably go for 20mm, although I have a feeling that they will be used for DBA-RRR much more than for DBR.

Personally I think the double rank of Pk on a 20mm deep base looks brilliant (and more apt), so would second that. And anyone who has a problem with it can go -

Local DBA-RRR fan, Eric Donaldson, bases all his RRR Pikes on 20mm deep bases, with 8 figures to a base. I like the visual effect, as seen below.
![]() We're both glad Tony allows this basing as an alternative. It does give Pike & Shot armies that are based this way a slight tactical edge if opponents' Pikes are based on 15mm deep stands, but so far we have not run into that. |
