I think it's a good thing that there wasn't a WRG when chess was invented. Otherwise, we might have version 20, 317 by now. |

The dominant form of chess varied enormously through history. We are in a long period of stability but what we play is called "The game of the mad queen" and was once considered an innovation.

Expendable SCh work because
* They do not count towards the losses * They can use a double move and so for 2PIPs can strike from beyond the range of the enemy to hit a critical point in the line * They have a wide variety of Quick Kills that they can dish out. Many of them (Ax, Wb, Art) have them at even factors when double overlapped. Expendable Hd will not work because * Their strike range is on the short side of movement (okay not so much for 5Hd). *They are QKd by a wide variety of enemy (not as much as they once were I will admit) but do not QK anything. * When gone they leave behind an open flank for the enemy Kn to fall upon. I am not at all happy with the inclusion of compulsory Hd in the Anglo Danish army - it strikes me as using a particluar incidence not unlike the way that the Sui were saddled with compulsory Hd for hte "Million Man Army" (one campaign) because it was "Interesting", "The Most Important Campaign of the army's History" and "If the Hd were not compulsory no one would use them". Did Harold take Home Defence Levies as part of his offensive into Wales? Did Siward bring the Militia with him to attack Macbeth in Scotland? When the Godwins were proposing to send aid to Swein Ethrsisson in Denmark were they suggesting putting peasants with sharp sticks into boats? I think not Cheers

Maybe make Hd 2 PIPs to move (poor command and control + low morale and reluctance to advance). That would discourage their use as assault troops.
