Default Wars of the Roses

Hi All I am thinking of doing a book four IV/83 Wars of the Roses army, as I have never done this period before, I would like some figure advice please.
What figures are the best ones to purchase for this army? I have already seen the new Donnington figures and I am sorry to say they are not much better than there old range , so could anyone please give me some advice on who makes the best figures for this period please.

Kind Regards.
Adrian.

If it were me, I'd go with Peter Pig.

I am considering a WoR project too. Have a look at the Tin Soldier sculpts - they are quite quirky and you'll either love or hate them! They apparently mix well with the nice Black Hat range. Peter Pig fellas are a fine looking bunch.

Default WotR figures

I have Donnington and like them. With your being in the UK, you won't have to pay the outrageous shipping charges of Donnington either...I recently picked up some raw lead in the WotR period that are Essex...I have to agree that they look very nice (unpainted)....we'll see once they get some paint on them.

Mirliton have some beautiful figures for Burgundian/Swiss wars; most of those would be nearly perfect.

I will second DK's assessment of Mirliton, they make beautiful figures and very suitable for WoTR. As a second choice, the Essex and Peter Pig figures are both good. I like the Essex ones, their later knights and dismounted MAA have much more variety than their earlier ranges. the Peter Pig ones are also very good, nice variety and animation.

To be honest, if I was doing it from scratch, and money and shipping costs no object, Mirliton for me. If money was tight, I would be comparing the overall costs, as all of them would give you a very nice army.

I would also suggest investing a lot of time in getting flags and banners done nicely. The basic figures are usually heavily armoured, so the real colour and movement comes from the banners etc. There are quite a few websites providing free downloads, so check those out.

some inspiration here:

If I can suggest the best technique for flags I have found is to purchase a piece of wire (I use a brass rod I originally bought to make flight-stands with) just larger than the normal diameter of your flagpoles.

Now print out your flags on normal printer paper - cut them out. Wrap them round the flagpole and apply white glue (PVA) to one side, squash together, give it a few minutes then twist them around the wire so it is moving freely. Now squash the flag into a nice animated shape, and let the white glue set.

You will now have a reasonably nice looking flag, possibly with the print surface broken where the folds have been put in. That's Flag standard 1. For really nice looking flags, now find reasonable paint colour matches for the printed colours and start painting in the large colour areas on the flag, do highlights on the creases and edges, and you should end up with a very good looking flag. Flag standard 2.

Examples are here...

Hope this helps.
