Default Fanaticus - the return?

With the sad but understandable news that Fanaticus will be closing down in a few months, I thought I might start a new thread to explore what we as a community might want to do in terms of replacing it. I appreciate that there is still the Yahoo group but, for me, that never seemed as good.

I am something of an IT luddite but a cursory search suggests that there are various free (ie comes with adverts!) forum hosts around that are, allegedly, not too difficult to use.

I guess there will be people out there much better equipped to comment - any thoughts?

Regards,

Simon

Well said Simon. Fanaticus has been my number one site all along, and the Yahoo forums are nice, but cannot compare. I was a daily, and all day long daily Fanaticus user. Chris gave us an exceptional venue!

I am not in a position to run such a forum as I can barley turn on a PC even though I worked for a major computer company - but not as a techy, I would sure be happy to try and help support an effort to keep Fanaticus going.

Also not of the techno-fluent class myself.

If we could do a forum + wiki site somehow. Forum for the community. Wiki for the info which would distribute the entry and maintenance load for things like army notes, figure manufacturers and reviews, etc. As always, a key requirement would be solid moderation to keep it open to all aspects of DBA gaming as Fanaticus has always been.

The BIGGEST problem for me on the Yahoo site is that I'll see something, comment on it and then HOURS will go by before it is posted.

When it IS posted there will be a ton of responses all on top of each other and it gets confusing.

I heartily welcome something else.

Just wanted to say I am open to, and willing to do anything I can to assist or cooperate with, such a transition.

For fans of the VBulletin board itself, one option that I had considered, by the way, was moving to the VBulletin cloud option, which has the option of using a blog-style CMS built around (and integrated into) its bulletin board that could be used to manage a site...although a wiki would also be ideal for capturing user-generated content.

I think if there are a group of people willing to be moderators/admins to share the load this is very doable. Let me look into it - I like the wiki/forum approach.

Fanaticus may yet live!

OK....so I started to throw something together. Its a long way to go, but you could get the idea from this Two free sites one wiki and one forum.

Happy to hear from anyone regarding thoughts/offers to help put this together and keep the great community here together.

Well, I sent Chris a PM proposing a Facebook page for DBA/Fanaticus so the community could still connect, discuss, and post notices, etc. I would be willing to create, maintain, and moderate such a page...what does the community feel about that ?
