Default Skin Color for the Uruk-hai

OK, I have read abut the Uruk-hai in The Fellowship book, but no real description given there that I recall. However, in the book "Arms and Armor of LotR" they are described as having black and dark red skin. I am about half way through the Two Towers and may find more information there, but thought I'd go ahead and ask. How do you see them as regards their skin color.

Thanks,

This is an interesting question.

Understanding the culture and word usage of the term “Black” in describing skin tone is useful. Essentially skin colour not “white” or “swarthy” (Mediterranean/ No. African).

My own Bad Boyz are painted in three different shades of dark brown to a medium brown. Much larger than the masses and painted darker than the rest they look quite fierce.

The guys in the movie seem to have a mottled red/black skin with a seagull poop white hand.

It seems simplest to go with something like their appearance in the movie. Lots of images, and I'm sure, lots of painting guides about the net.

A dissenting opinion...
The Uruk-Hai of Mordor, first used by Sauron earlier in the Third Age, are indeed described as "black Uruks", and the captain in Moria that almost skewers Frodo has "coal black" skin. Given Sauron's interest in the region, I think it very likely that this particular orc-captain was on "special assignment" out of Mordor.

However, it is at least arguable that the Uruk-Hai of Saruman, who are unlike any orcs Aragorn had ever seen (and he should know, having spent many years behind the lines in Mordor and elsewhere), are in fact hybrid man-orcs. Elsewhere, those of the hybrids that are more man-like than orc-like are described as "sallow", rather than dark. The weedy little orcs of the Misty Mountains ("goblins" in The Hobbit) and the (unnamed, miserable) human slaves/guinea pigs of Saruman's ghastly breeding program would have been lighter-skinned.

Therefore, I would say that at least a strong case could be made for Saruman's Uruk-Hai to be swarthy at the very darkest, possibly with a yellowish tinge.

Some interesting discussion here. Oh, I'd love that painting guide, but at $40, I'm not sure I can swing it!

I've not painted my army for Saruman yet, so I am enjoying this discussion.

As someone with an inordinate amount of LOTR figures, manufactured by GW, primarily plastics, I decided to use them to make several HOTT armies last year, following the lead of a lot of other gamers on this forum.

I suppose the decision to be made is, do I follow Peter Jackson's interpretations, as seen in the various movies, or do I stick to the descriptions in the primary source?
