Default Rear support

Teaching a new player and got a question I have never thought of before :-)

Rear Support, 1st paragraph, Spears facing Knights get a +1 with another spear in rear contact facing same direction.

Second Paragraph, Spears facing mounted get +1 if Psiloi are in rear contact or adjacent to the Spear in combat with the mtd unit.

So this new player asked, does that mean if in combat in the open against a Knight I get the +1 for the second rank of spears and a +1 with an adjacent Psiloi so he has a combat value of +6 vs the knight?

If so, I've never played it that way, I always gave one or the other not both.

What is the correct way?

Thanks.

I think you could make a case for it either way.
Many people at the HMGS-East cons play that way, although we never gave them BOTH with our gaming group in Florida.

We play it that way. If you use a formation with five Sp elements in a line, two-one-two, then support the middle single Sp with a Ps then as a group it's a very tough nut for Kn to crack....factors would be +6/+5/+6, and if one of the Sp is your general all the better.

However, that's all changed in the noo version.

Just to clarify, it has changed in 3.0.
2.2+ remains as described earlier.

I've always played that both apply, there being no explicit rule in 2.2 nor 2.2+ stating that one of them does not apply.
