This is a rebuilt Thracian camp I completed a few days ago.
My original camp, built about two years ago, was a grassy hill with a toothpick stockade on top. It looked just like a flocked hill with toothpicks on top of it. I wanted something more historically accurate and visually interesting. The stockade was ripped off and replaced with a hill carved from blue foamboard. The base of the hill, along with the stacked stone wall on top are made of kitty litter. The steps were inspired by a visit to a Thracian/Byzantine/Ottoman fort I visited near Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 2006. These were carved with an X-Acto knife. The whole thing was painted black then drybrushed with light browns and greys. The flocking at the base is Gale Force 9 "Autumn Mix". The figures are conversions of an Essex Greek, an Old Glory archer, and a Xyston Thracian slinger. They are posed to suggest a desperate defense - throwing rocks, peering out from behind the wall (both the warrior and his shield), and turning back while ascending the steps for another shot. I thought about putting a cart full of rocks on top, being pushed to the edge and ready to roll downhill on the enemy, but it simply took up too much room! I like the idea of this camp being built on the foundation of the old camp I made - much like the actual fortifications that inspired this piece.

Lotsa cool stuff to commend your fine effort on this: That you built it atop a previous camp, that the idea was inspired by on-location "research", and that it evokes a last-stand sense of desperation.
I'd say this camp is deserving of an extra "+1" in Close Combat. (Grins.) |

When your only protection is a wall of rocks you have to be very careful how many rocks you throw at your enemies....
