Hi, does anyone have any recommendations for Late Roman figures? Who are the best manufacturers?
And basically, does anyone have photos of the figures so I can see for myself? thanks in advance |

I like Gladiator the best. There are a bunch of images of my Gladiator Late Roman (LR) figures on my 15mm figure review webpage.

Gladiator makes very nice Late Imperial Romans. They are regular in that poses are the same in each pack. Bd, Ax, Bw, Ps, Cav, Kn, Lh etc. Only the command packs have different figures. The mounted command packs usually contain an officer, a standard bearer (or 2) and/or an escort figure. The foot command pack has more figures. If you want figure variety I would recommend Essex at: http://www.essexminiatures.co.uk/index.htm Most have (or had) single poses. However the Essex RO Ax, 3Bd Bw now have multiple poses; specifically: RO52 Assorted Legionary archer RO53 Assorted Auxilia Javelinman RO54 Assorted Legionary lanciarii RO55 Assorted Auxilia archer While I only have the RO53 Assorted Auxilia Javelinman, they are very nice figures. OWS also manufactures very nice Late Imperial Romans These have multiple poses. See: http://www.outpostwargameservices.co.uk/ then: http://www.outpostwargameservices.co.uk/lateroman.html and jpg's of the Late Imprial Romans at: http://www.outpostwargameservices.co...n_gallery.html Which illustrates many of the figures poses. Like Gladiator, spears, javelins etc tend to be thin and brittle. From jpg's I have seen, Donnington and Pass of the North (currently out of production according to a notice on Fanaticus recently. I do not know what the current status is as the PotN website does not indicate that they are out of production?) also manufacture nice figures for the period. Excellent feedback guys! thanks a lot!
Do Outpost figures and Glads mix well together? I notice the Glad Legionaries have helmet crests while the Outposters don't. Basically though I'll refer to these 2 sites when I come to choosing. John |

I would not mix Gladiator with Outpost in a DBA army. Gladiator are on the small side of 15mm. The Late Roman range was sculpted by Josef Ochmann whose work is superb in my opinion. The Outpost Late Romans are noticeably larger (the foot are at least 2mm taller and the horses are noticeably larger than the Gladiator horses). I would have no reservations about combining them in a big battle DBA army (one of Gladiator the other of Outpost) or in a DBM army (in different commands). I would not base them on the same base because of the difference in size. Kind Regards Derek |

I think Donnington are excellent, except for the "Middle Imp-type" legionaries I have seen which are strangely side-on. In a review below they are called "the best" by Simon MacDowall

I am currently painting a Late Roman / Patrician Roman army using "Chariot Miniatures" although they are now owned by another company.
I think these multi-pose figures are among the best in quality available. They mix perfectly well with the essex miniatures. |
