I know that I can target
either edge to determine if another element blocks my fire as in
situation 1 or 2

In situation 4 (assuming I am Bow A) I am targeting my Right Front
edge at Ax Ts Right Front edge and my Left Front edge at Ax T(arget)s
Right Rear edge;

In effect targeting the entire right side edge of Ax T

This file illustrates
the 3 possible range situations I outline below.

Now my question; does the rear edge of Ax t need to be in range (2")
or can I target both of my edges at his Right front edge (at the
extreme) or somewhere in between?

The bow is in range in all three cases. Think about it -- if it was not so, then you would NEVER be able to fire at the side edge of a 6Cv element that was parallel to you (its side edge is 60mm long, which is more than 2").

(... but they should optional anyway 8-( ...)

so as long as both of my front edges have an unobstructed line to the enemy element that is 2" or less I am in range...simple enough

I don't think this has any impact but, just to cover all the bases; In case 1 of my illustration #2 (in_range.GIF) this would count as targeting the FRONT edge?

If it were me, I would say you had to target the side edge, as you cannot draw a LOS to both front edge corners of the target in your case 1, but can draw LOS to the side corners. This is what I understand by 'another element is even partly between the shooting edge and the target edge'.

But if between is between, what is partially between? This is the Zen of DBA.
