A question came up at Cold Wars about rear support. Must an element give support to one in front if in a position to do so.
That was asked of Phil for 1.1 and he said yes. The 2.x rules are supposed to clarify that.
The rule is
"Pikes add +3 and Warband +1 when in frontal close combat against any enemy except Cavalry, Light Horse, Scythed Chariots, Bows or Psiloi, and Spears add +1 if in frontal close combat against Knights or Spears, if in either case they are supported by a friendly element of the same type lined up directly behind and facing the same direction, and neither supported nor supporting element is in bad going.
It is not "can add" or "may add" but just "add" No decision on the part of the player, just as there is not for overlaps or for fighting if in proper contact. If support is not wanted then players should not put elements in such a position.
