What are the start and end times for this event?
How long for each round?
Which rules set do you use? 2.0, 2.2 or the NASAMW rules mod?

Andy Swingle
07-04-2009, 12:17 AM
2.2 rules, I do not know the NASAMW rules mod.:) We do not play with BUA or rivers.

John Loy
07-04-2009, 06:25 AM
Start at 10:00. 3 rounds I can't remember whether we ran 2 or 2.5 hour rounds (I think 2.5):eek

I have let the final run longer of it was the championship.

Nasamw rules are used (60" boards) actually you can use a river but I've never seen one- good way to no finish although less so in Big Battle that normal size. No BUA though, substitute a road.

We will brackett by period, depends on how many attendees but no more than 8 per.

Plenty of loaner armies available.

Thanks John,

I was considering a fly in fly out same day from Baltimore to Columbus.
Southwest has $49 each way....cheaper than gas for me I think and shorter travel time. Would meet the Travel/Game Time ratio as DK says.

Unfortunately they don't have flights early enough in the AM that day.

John Loy

fatcat217
07-18-2009, 02:40 PM
The classical and Tamil armies are 90% old glory with essex elephants. The armies are built to use each others stands ..I meant to sell them in the case/box with dice and camps and the odd Hott unit included. Ming are book 4/73. Tibetans incude 20 Kn4s.

Andy Swingle
07-18-2009, 03:52 PM
Oh, you are selling all three as one lot? I was just interested in the one army.. I will bring cash just in case.:)

John Loy

There are many good and a few "challenging" loaners available.

Let me know and I will email you a list.

Andy, All Indians in one box, all aztec in one box etc. There are 9 elephants, 9 charoits, 9 Kn, 3 arty., 2 camps, and at least 70 infantry stands. And the case they're in.

OK, we are 4 weeks away from the premier Big Battle Tournament of the year.

We have a small format change this year.

Zeke has volunteered to run the tourney, so that I can be assured of playing. Zeke will fill in if there is an odd number; otherwise he will collect the scores, make the pairings etc.
I will provide the logistics as usual.

In return; I will swap jobs for Zeke's HOTTWAX tournament.

I'm thinking I'm going to give the Avars a try, again. My last experience with them was they were the "neither fish nor fowl" problem: Mounted army with a large Auxilia contingent. Should I steal some of John's thunder...? Nah. I will let you know that Ptom was NOT Queen of the Universe. The person who beat him in the first round ended up wearing the tiara and holding the sceptre. No, wasn't me!

Though, I did go 3-0 and win the Later Bracket. I was edged out by the aforementiond NEW Queen of the Universe on points...thankfully. The expression on my face at having my picture taken with a tiara and sceptre would have been even more mournful than our new Queen's.

Many thanks to all who attended...especially those that drove great distances, including:
John Lawitzke (5 hour drive from Michigan)
Rich Kurman and Bruce Woodworth (drove down form northern Ohio)
Dan Joyce and Jim Yencer (down from Lima, OH)
Bob Boggs (from Springfield)
-- and of course to all the locals who made it! 18 players, up a couple from the Post-Tax Day BBDBA, made for 3 brackets of 6.

Special thanks to John Loy for hosting (organizing, providing prizes & food) and Zeke for running (so that John could play) -- you guys are the best!!! As I said, I remember the old days, when only one or two of us ran events. It's folks like you that make it so much more fun to participate in these events, since so many of us pitch in and GM, nowadays...!

Well, I had 0 chance of walking away with the tiara this year. (Wait a minute, I keep it here at my house. So, in a way, I DID walk away with it! :silly )

I played the Ancient Spanish with a total of 6 mounted, 18 Aux & 12 Psiloi. I lost the first 2 terrain rolls and was up against lots of mounted & blades on WIDE OPEN boards. There was nowhere to hide all of my "bad going" troops. I must say though, I had the most fun I've had playing big battle in a LONG time! Maybe that's the key, take the craziest, most off the wall army & just wing it.

It was good to see everyone & I truly enjoyed seeing the new Queen of the Universe crowned!!!

DRUM ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had 18 players in 3 -6 player bracketts.

In an effort to reduce "civil wars" we commingled the first 2 bracketts which were all book I/II armies. The third brackett was every one else.

Early/Early Brackett:
Dave Welch NKE 3-0 280points
Tom Graves Alex Imperial/ Classic Indian Ally 2-1 197points
Rich Kurman Seleucid 1-2 126points
Jeff Fletcher NKE 1-2 110points
Bob Boggs EIR/ Commagene Ally 1-2 102points
Derek Wegener Han Chinese 0-3 10points

Not Quite so Early Brackett:
John Lawitzke NKE 2-1 207points
Bruce Woodworth Marian/ Numidian Ally 2-1 183points
Tim Ryan Galatian 1-2 126points
Dan Joyce Graeco-Bactrian 1-2 100points
Dylan Fraser Sassanid 1-2 98points
Jenny Torbett Ancient Spanish 0-3 38points

Later Brackett:
Mike Demana Avar 3-0 266points
Allen Sams Later Hungarian 2-1 194points
John Loy Rus 1-2 121points
Jim Yencer French Ordonnance/ Swiss Ally 1-2 117points
Andy Swingle LIR/ Later Isalmic Ally 1-2 112points
Jonathan Wegener Post Mongol Samurai 1-2 90points

John

Mike Demana
08-23-2009, 12:38 PM
Nah, no meta-gaming on my end...I was joking. I tried my hardest to finish John Loy off as quickly as I could, but he hung on tenaciously. The game itself could have gone a different way if his pip dice had not been so awful. Included in his command rolls were turns when he rolled for pips:
1-1-1
1-1-2
1-1-2
1-2-2
Nasty! But then again, he mostly kept his spear wall together, so minimized his handicap. My cavalry and light horse kept giving ground, being forced to flee in the center, while we kept winning on the wings. The key point in our game was when he had his spear line wade in to contest a large woods against my Auxilia line. That was where he lost the bulk of his troops, and in my opinion, the battle.

So, though I joked about taking some losses to avoid the tiara, you won it fair and square with your extremely minimal losses over the course of your three games, Dave!

I did finally beat Tom Graves at DBA. However, my victory was achieved before we were even matched up! I found that the key to beating Tom is to loan him your dice! :)

I have never seen anyone roll that badly, while at the same time I was rolling so well. I don't think I rolled under a four in combat more than twice and I don't think Tom rolled over a four more than a couple of times.

My second match was against Derek Wegener. He lined up his 12-ish bow against my 12 LCh with predictable results, given my die rolling.

My third match was against Rich Kurman who should receive some recognition for his sportsmanship. At a critical moment in the game he had my blade general double overlapped against his double rank of Pike and he rolled a 5 to my 1. Before I could even do the math to determine that he had killed my general, he picked up the die and re-rolled a 3, because it's his policy to re-roll any die that ends up on a unit. I'd have been fine (particularly after seeing the pictures of me with the "regalia") for him to have used the original roll.

Congratulations to Dave, Queen of the Universe! Thanks to all the players and especially to the strange two-headed TD John and Zeke who were apparently caught in the transporter beam when they were beaming over from Alpha Centauri.

Which, to me, is like showing up at the reception but skipping the wedding. Oh? Cake? Sure, cut me a slice...

Though, to be fair, he did re-up for Great Lakes for the two of them while there. Which gives up hope that he or Mike will attend an event in the future...perhaps even Advance the Colors...!

Fashionably late. Didn't have cake, but the sloppy joes were good (and my 5yr old knows good sloppy joes!) -Thanks John.

ATC looks like a green light for me. Possibly with a new army too. I'm actually venturing out of Book 1 & 2 for a change.

Congrats Dave!

mrs cole gave me the "you're making a lot of assumptions" speech about going to ATC... so looks like the only thing I'm going to be painting before ATC is walls, keeping my mouth shut (always a tough one), and lots of happy smiles. :D

I always knew you wore the pants in your family, Mike. Throw the Tuskegee Airmen line at her: These veterans are dying off at a rate of thousands per day. This may be the last chance to see these WW II heroes.

Flexibility, Engineer Cole, flexibility...adapt to your enemy, play to their weaknesses! Just like you do in DBA...hmm. Maybe not like *you* do in DBA!

Gosh Yes.....I was glad to know a local Tuskegee Airmen that unfortunately passed this year, they are a tight-knit group and I'm sure that we could share stories about our fallen friend.

Ah, the coveted "Kitchen-Pass" I haven't brought up the subject of ATC in my house yet.....
