Sorry to change the thread, but I was wondering if anyone out there knew the rationale for having pip rolls during a big battle always divided so that one command always gets the most and another the least. Why is that considered preferable to independant die rolls for each contingent of the army? It seems to me, unless we assume that every army had at least one really horrible commander, that this is not a particularly reasonable way of doing business.

Waiting for enlightenment

I think the point is to make you concentrate your effort. In planning the battle you have to make a choice about where your major attack will be and where else you will have to play conservative or defend.

I don't believe it has anything to do with judgments about quality of generals -- other than the assumption that you would put your most energetic general in the area of the battle you expect to make your biggest push.
