View Full Version : Double Size Tourney at ATC

Hi folks,
I thought I'd start a new thread for next month's upcoming 15mm Double Size DBA Tourney at Advance the Colors on Friday, Sept. 21. Since John Loy's thread on August's BBDBA Tourney was so successful in rallying players to the competition, we'll try it here!
First of all, for those who thought the tourney at New Song ran a little long, the Double Size Tourney fixes that. Games last about 1.5 hours -- and less, if you stick your army CnC's nose out front where it doesn't belong. There is a lot of maneuver room in this game -- 24 elements on a 4'x2' board. It's a fun little format, and you finish your three rounds in about the same time you'd finish a four round "single size" tourney.
I'm looking forward to only my second time playing in this tourney...usually I run it, so don't get to play. Last year, though, Mike Stelzer and I switched Tournies we GM at ATC, and now he runs it. 2006 was also when I tried my Light Horse experiment in the tourney, which failed miserably. So, don't look for me to run another LH army this year!
I'm actually thinking of something Biblical...either double size New Kingdom Egyptian or a Canaanite with NKE ally. See! The cat's out of the bag (and I hate cats!), so what are others thinking of bringing....?
HMMMMMMMMMMMMM....?

Still undecided ... may drag out the Condotta, may drag out the Samurai. Might even pull the Normans off the shelf and see if I can scrounge up an ally. Whatever I bring, I'm pretty sure it won't be Greek :).
Or maybe I'm just planning to fool you all and bring double Thracians ;).

I have really enjoyed double DBA when I have played it.
I tried the LH experiment in 2004 at Origins. Bad idea. My best battle was against defending samurai in the woods. Others were not pretty.
The biggest difference between full BBDBA and double is the lack of a mid-pip command. You get one high and one low. I end up having to think more in terms of two wings of any army rather than a center with two flanks.
I don't know what I'll run, yet. It will have to be something Punic Wars related or a Byzantine/Bedouin - as those are all my armies.

As Mike Demana already knows, I'm going to bring my newly won Siamese. I'm not going to have an opportunity to play them in the open tournament, so Mike is loaning me his Siamese army so I can play in the double sized tournament.
I'm really interested in trying this army out. It's a big departure for me to have elephants.

Not sure if I'm going to play a double of my (hopefully by then) newly painted Teutonics (borrowing a single size from John - I CAN borrow a single size from you, can't I John?), or trying a double of my recently won Carthaginians (borrowing a single size from Mike).
Like Zeke - DEFINITELY no more Greeks. I think they've been overused & abused in the last year or more.

Jenny,
I have a tuetonic army and am a lot cheaper than John to buy for. Limit 2 for me, if that. (It's a rent price I can live with, plus it might bug John!) :D

I appreciate the offer Mike. And, as much fun as it would be to bug John, I HAVE to go with his. I've gone 5 & 1 with his Teutonics. I can't risk losing the luck. The problem now will be to find the "Lucky" 12 elements to use  .

There is now a 50/50 chance of being there tomorrow. I will bring the "lucky Teuts" if I can make it.
Funny, they were never lucky for me. Must be a female touch:rolleyes:

50/ 50 for me too; First army into my head for DDBA was Aztecs with ally, then Hsia, then naked screaming Galatians started sounding good, but who knows...

Is deployment as the rulebook in Double DBA? (All defener then all attacker followed by the swap.)
Or is there some variation on the NASAMW BBDBA deployment variant?

That's the way we played it Saturday for our practice at Frankie's. I'm pretty sure Mike S. is planning on doing it the same.

Oh, I'm not afraid to play against Jenny. But I knew that the tide would eventually have to turn, and that she'd eventually start defeating me. Of course, I didn't expect it to be back-to-back like in the HOTT Origins tourney and then BBDBA! I can't wait till she starts slapping both of your grinning mugs around, too...! And I hope I have my digicam handy...!!!

Can we create a name (and then an acronymn) for 2-Command DBA. Double Size Tourney is a mouthfull. How about DDBA for Double DBA?
John Meunier
09-06-2007, 09:47 PM
Duece
Double DBA
Twins
DBA 24
High Low (for the two commands)
????? Just throwing out ideas
Pavane

Or 2CDBA for 2-Command DBA. Something has to resonate. I have several pairs (it is amazing how many enemies are also sometimes allies), but only two BBDBA's so far. This is a viable game format and deserves a name.

As former Army, I have developed an aversion to acronyms. There is almost always a simpler way of stating it using common words. And in this particular case, I challenge anyone to come up with one that takes less syllables than "Dou-ble Size"...3 lousy syllables! Why do we need to abbreviate that? It's easier to say Double Size...
Especially when you consider some of the bad ones we have in this community, especially NASAMW - the world's worst acronym...how can anyone have a clue how to pronounce that?

Lemme see ... "DS" would be all of two syllables. :p
2-size :P
DS.... interesting how David Slanger (spelling?) gor transformed into a DBA acronym. He should be feeling honoured :P
For good or for bad, the net is quite the realm of the acronym, nowadays.

You bringing along any of your burgeoning Newark contingent? Who'd have thunk it: Newark, Ohio, hotbed of BBDBA...?
John Meunier

I've been toying around with all my posible DBA 24 armies:
Several Punic War era armies and ally combos
Dynastic Bedouin
Nikephorian Byzantine/Konstantinian Byzantine
And the one high pip, one low pip nature of this version of BBDBA has been scratching my head. The natural thing seems to be a refused wing and an attacking wing, but some armies just don't lend themselves really well to that kind of structure - Bedouins being my best example.
I'm curious how other veterans of Double Size BBDBA go about organizing commands and missions for their troops.

Lamentably, it looks like this has become a moot point for me. Due to forces beyond my control [read: people "associated" with our hosting company], I am most likely going to need to be home Friday and Saturday while we perform yet another hosting move.
[insert colorful string of Dave expletives here]
This mean I will 90% likely miss Friday and 60% likely miss Saturday afternoon ... I may not even be able to make it for the HOTT tournament Saturday night. I'll be calling to adjust my hotel reservation this afternoon. No DBA24, no Open, maybe no HOTT, and maybe no ATC at all.
[chain of f-bombs included for dramatic effect]
But hey, my loss is your loss. This means the Little Kings won't be arriving till Saturday, if at all. Though I'll do my best to get the prize for HOTT to Eric anyway, just in case.
Sorry, all :(.

That is lamentable, Zeke. In fact, it sucks.

Seriously, Zeke, I hope you can make it after all...

Well, I'm going to play it by ear. I don't yet know how much I have to do Friday, but I likely wouldn't be able to come up till late (I had originally planned to take the day off.)
Once I get up there, I'm likely only going to be able to pop in and watch a few games (drink a beer or two) here and there, spending the rest of the time in the hotel on the laptop. That goes for Friday night and Saturday afternoon for sure, so I can't really count on playing in either DBA tournament. Same potentially goes for HOTT.
On any or all of those days, I may have to drive back to Cincinnati (or just abandon the con altogether), depending on how much I have to "fix" and what it entails.
But, I'll do my best to make sure we at least have beer :). Oh, and a pretty cool HOTT grand prize.

Lamentably family and marching band booster obligations are going to keep me scarce as well. I am trying to make Saturday, but the first band contest of the year is Saturday. I am hoping to make the HOTT tournament.
I will definitely be there Saturday evening to run a Victorian Science Fiction/Colonial event: The Battle of El Teb II, Sudan 1885. Watch out for those Martian armed natives!
As for the Bushmills, I can only say:
"God bless the Irish!"

Maybe you can get WiFi from the Hotel at the convention and you can sit there and keep the IT world running while pushing lead. Stranger things have happened!

I was going to put together a pool to see when you were going to hand me my butt in a tournament, guess it will have to wait. Going to miss the games, laughs and quips if you don't make it. By the way did you get the ad I forwarded to you. Saw it and thought of some of the comments you've made at origins and ATC last year.

I will make it for Friday anad Sat for a full week end of DBA/Hott. I haven't done double size in a couple of years.
I also have a new army for Sat that I'm looking forward to putting on the field. 12 dismounting knights with bows that can split into 24 ps. It's in the latest version, book 5.
Many more new Green Guys for Hott. I've finally made some magicians.
Looking forward to another fun ATC!

HAH! I'd be satisfied with just beating you in a GAME. You've had me up against the ropes for too long now. If I do nothing else, I'm going to try and play at least a few games during HOTT. We can throw down there ...

and, they didn't lose every game in the DBA Doubles. I used a Samnite army with Camillian Roman ally - my 2 losses came when the Samnite command was broken. My one win came when the Samnites got into the Han Chinese BW in the woods, and things went poorly for the Han.
A big suprise was losing my Samnites to the Sassanid Persian horde. I used my Samnite arny to face a command made up of 2xHD, 1xEL, 1xKN,1xEL,1xKN,2xHD - didn't work. The AX couldn't budge the HD, and I lost 3 AX trying - then a frigging KN cherry picked another AX, and that was it!
I lost BIG to the Selucid army, but my Samnites got a QK on the EL, making the whole thing worthwhile.
