What follows are the campaign Rules for the upcoming friday night session at Nashcon.
A campaign game for an Even number of players (at least 6) representing the struggles for power among the various Jagatai, Chinggisid and Barlas clans in the mid 1300's. It was in this historical setting that Timur Lenk was able to consolidate his control or Transoxiana which led to his control of almost all of central Asia.
Armies: Each player starts with any army of 6 elements. A Cav General, 2 x cav and 3x light horse. Each player starts each battle with 6 elements recieving back any loses from the previous battle.
Reserve box: 2 cav, 4 horde, 6 aux, 1 bow and3 psiloi are available in the reserve box. Each time a player is on the winning side of a battle he gets to select one element out of the reserve box which becomes a permanent part of his army. In this way some of the armis will slowly increase in size during the campaign. If all the reserve elements have been selected then no more are available.
Starting the game: each player rolls 3 dice. High role is the 'Great Emir'. 2nd highest role is the 'rival'. All other players represent emir's of their respective clans. In each battle the Great Emir and the Rival are the c-in-c's.
The Great Emir summons a player to be on his side. The Rival then chooses. this alternates till all players are evenly split up on one of the 2 sides. When summoned a player may chose to ignore the summons. If this happens then the summons passes to the other c-in-c. Once one c-in-c has taken half the players those left automatically go to the other c-in-c. The Rival chooses a board side and deploys one command. Deployment alternates between the 2 sides one command at a time. The Great Emir's side goes first.
Playing area: These battles are played on a 4x2 area with the minimum amount of Steppe terrain. At the end of each battle randomly rearrange the terrain.
Winning and losing: The first side to lose 50% of its elements destroyed or having left the board loses. If a c-in-c's element is destroyed that side loses. If an individual command loses it's general or 3 elements it is demoralized (as per bbdba).
The c-in-c whose side wins is the Great Emir for the next battle. the player with the highest point total is the Rival for the next battle.
End turn: When the battle ends the winning side immediantly gets a free turn for the purpose of inflicting as many casualties on the enemy army as possible in an attempt to increase the amount of points being scored for that battle.
Points: Each player scores points as follows.
Each enemy element destroyed; 1 point.
Destroy enemy general; +1 point.
Destroy enemy c-in-c +2 points.
Capture enemy camp +2 points.
On winning side +2 points.
Suffer population Massacre -3 points.
Population Massacre: At the end of each battle when new point totals have been tallied the reigning Great Emir may select one player (any player) for population massacre. This can be used to knock a potential rivals points down or perhaps to punish a player your irked at (it's good to be the Great Emir)
Campaign end: Play continues for a predetermined number of battles at which time the player with the highest number of points is declared the Lord of Samarkand.
