In the campaign the Sea Peoples lost a battle against a combined Egytian/Libyan force and retired to Crete and from there to Cyprus. The Egyptians attacked Crete then withdrew when the Sea Peoples sent a releif force.
At the same time the Libyans attacked Mycenaean held Sparta and took it after two seasons of siege.
This was the cue for a revenge attack by the Sea Peoples, who sailed from Knossos to Sparta in an effort to cut off the Libyans. Despite the dangers of desert and ocean – offers of support came flying in for the Libyans. Egypt set out from Sais via Farafra, the Trojans sent a force from Sminthe and allowed the Gasgans to pass Sminthe from Palhuissa. The Libyans chose their ground well – with two steep hills to cover their centre, they faced the Sea Peoples who had the ocean to their rear. The heights were secured by Libyan skirmishers on the right and bowmen to the left whilst in the gap between the hills stood the chariot and warbands. The vast assemblage of Sea People swordsmen advanced cautiously towards the enemy – with a third of their force peeling off to deal with the Egyptians when they arrived. This might have been the undoing of the Sea Peoples as the flank of both these lines was threatened by the skirmishers on the hill. Far off to the rear of the Sea People’s line, the Trojans arrived and tried to move through the sand dunes to join the battle, but there remained no sign of the other contingents. The Sea People commander continued to advance to where he expected the Egyptians to arrive, and was pounced on by the Libyan skirmishers who charged down the hill and caught him in the flank. The Libyan centre also took the opportunity to charge home against the enemy blades – managing to overlap the line on both sides. The fighting was brief but brutal with an element of blades with their rear support being overrun by the warbands and the general in his chariot overwhelmed and cut down by the skirmishers. One remaining blade element held firm and drove back their attackers before the army withdrew in good order to their ships and back to Crete leaving three elements dead behind them. The Trojans had arrived but took no part in the battle, whilst the Gasgans and Egyptians failed to show up.
