View Full Version : Which cons have triple BBDBA tournaments?

Here in the Great Lakes, the old 3 army BBDBA tournament seems to have gone the way of the dodo. I like Mike Demana's double-sized variant, but it is a different beast.
I think Nashcon dropped BBDBA due to low attendance.
I know Historicon and Cold Wars still host BBDBA. Where else is it still played?

Interest at H'con and Cold Wars has been a fairly constant increase since its induction.

If there is enough interest, we will put a BBDBA tourney back in Nashcon. But it really isn't worth setting it up and getting prizes etc... for only 3 contestants. Get me a half a dozen or more firm commitments and it will come back to Nashcon. But I will hold those committed to showing up and playing all of the way through. (On pain of being sold on one of the flea market tables in the tourney area of the Lampeter Room...)

Ed,
I have no complaints about your decision. It appears to me that outside the East, BBDBA has failed to catch on.
I know I have no room to gripe. I have not done much in the way of proselytizing the game.

I know I have no room to gripe. I have not done much in the way of proselytizing the game. As with most new things in small populations, success is related to having a few energetic enthusiasts to prime the pump. You can't rely on conversion of DBMites, because they play DBM when they play with more than 12 stands. And the DBAers mostly collect lots of armies rather than triples of a single army. So there is a small but noticable hurdle to clear before playing BBDBA.
With that said, I love the game, and play it whenever possible.

Well, at the cons I attend in the southeast, the regular dba tournaments draw 10-16 people and some of those are only casual players. Many do not have BB-sized armies.
There is also the obstacle of getting people to commit an entire day to a tournament; at many local cons Friday and Sunday are light on gaming and Saturday is the only day many can attend.

At Hurricon and Recon in addition to the standard tourney (Open at Recon, Theme at Hurricon) I try to schedule a couple Giant Battle DBA games using the BB rules.
I'm averaging about 12 players in the tourneys and the the giant battle games have been bringing in new players.
I'm with Ed, I'll run whatever the players want, as long as I have enough commitment.

I love BBDBA. We play it on weekends sometimes and definitely at Historicon & Cold Wars. It's great because it allows you to have a teammate, and the end-game when commands start to collapse is nail-biting fun. You miss that part in regular DBA. I guess there's a hurdle in having enough lead but lucky for me there's alot of lead floating around D.C. Haven't had a problem with that.
Jonathan.

Marty,
Do you think new players come to the Giant Battle games because it is less intimidating then something that is termed a tourney (even a beginners tourney?)

BB is also good for running introductory games for 6 players. I've done this for Caesar invading Britain with a few special scenario rules. Its a good way to recruit, and/or just a fun scenario game for veteran players.

It was pretty evenly split between Big Battle scenario games and tournaments.
Alot of my players enter the tournament just so they can play DBA and really don't care about prizes or trophies or trips to the NICT. They just want to have a good time, roll some dice, taunt their friends good naturedly and play again!
