View Full Version : Historicon - Tony Bath Memorial BBDBA Championship

Hey all,
Thought I would enourage a little banter regarding BBDBA Doubles at Historicon, since it is only a couple of months away. It is scheduled for Friday July 21, 9AM-6PM.
Last year at Historicon, we had a fantastic turnout of 20 Teams for the Tony Bath event. I'm hoping for the same kind of turnout this year!
Please post here if you are planning to participate, if you are looking for another player to team up with, or if you just have something to comment...
Tentative participation list as of 5/20/06:
1) Chris Brantley and Jeff Caruso
2) David Kuijt and David Schlanger
3) Joe Collins and Ed Dillon
4) Roland Fricke and Jon Baldwin
5) Hank 'the Dread' Drapalski and Richard Wright
Just some of the many questions to ponder...
- What IS Chris Brantley and Jeff Caruso's "mystery" army?
- Can Larry and Rich make it two wins in a row, after storming to the doubles crown at Cold Wars?
- Will anybody take a wheelbarrow army?

Joe Collins and I plan to show up with another "lead with your chin" C-in-C. Who will be the first to trash our commanding general? We he be able to stand up to the Dreaded Drapalskis for more than 3 rounds? Stay tuned!

I am working on the army now and will post a picture of the General's figure  as soon as Chris has made the change over on Fanaticus.
Why would I give the secret army over to prying eyes?Because it is unstoppable. It suits our combined playing styles to a tee and automatically corrects for any generalship boo-boos. :D
Got stampeding cattle, flaming pigs, armored efellants with Howdy Doody in the howdah?Bring 'em on.Its just fresh meat for our army baby. tongue.gif
Heavy foot armies will not fare any better against us.We'll just be picking the armored bits out of our teeth. :D
Humbly yours,

Well, the army, which shall not be named :D ,is coming together and all that remains is to get the necessary customs paper work to get it into El Paso,Tx., from Chihuahau,Mx.Then of course, up to me in Denver, and off to the mold maker in Ohio, then back to me to paint it up.So,nothing to do now but kick back, chill out, open a brewski, and enjoy the thought of the Davids shopping for adult size Depends as the fear builds in them. tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif
Jeff
I assure you, I do not intend to strike fear in the hearts of those already committed to the BBDBA tournament, however, I do hereby announce that Richard B Wright and I will bring our armies to compete! (My son, who usually carries me in this event, will be in China this summer, so Rich has agreed to be the brains of the duo.) :D

Thank you, David. BBDBA is a highpoint of my year!

David, Larry Chaban will NOT be at Historicon. This is a definate instead of the last convention! He will be with the Boy Scouts climbing the Rockies (insert joke here about young Boy Scouts and climbing peaks....)
I'm shopping for a partner now, but my nephew still hasn't committed...he's first on my list.

Just so I know, what are the rules for fielding armies? Must they be completely painted, by hand or some is creative spray painting or "o" size barn brush allowed? :D Don't want a lot of whining :( when I show up with an army in "Understated Black", maybe with some red highlights.

Jeff The problem with being a practical joker, Jeff, is that nobody will ever be able to tell if you are asking a serious question.
Assuming you are being serious, there are no rules giving a minimum painting standard because nobody has ever shown up with an unpainted or primed army. And if you show up with one, don't be surprised if you are mocked to within an inch of your life by everyone who knows you (strangers are more polite than friends).

Most of the times that I've seen you die, it's been a one...
And I don't "come down from my roost". As the local gamers can tell you, I have blackout curtains so that I can hang from my toes in the closet... It ain't easy being a vampire these days.
You know how bad this could get for Dr. Kuijt. We start him groaning and then it's "2" "2" time. And the sight of us with tutus would not pretty, no sir, not pretty at all.
Perhaps a better plan would be to put the "Brothers David" play on the board between the board that Chris (Hail, Imperator!) and Jeff are playing on and the one that Joe and I are on. Cross-fire can be brutal. We should try to get Marty behind him to make sure that we have enfilade fire regardless of how he tries to dodge. He can't recoil, that way. He'll be done in by the "Buttocks of Death". He might bring a bow army or light horse army, but he'll get trampled by the asses... tongue.gif

The good news for Team Imperator is the Sacred Banner smile.gif has arrived.Actually,Chris is the CinC so its the Lackey's Standard Only but why quibble.A tremendous boost in morale for an army whose troops are yet only a gleam in the sculptor's eye.
Painstakingly, hand-stiched in 15mm scale by the women of CCDOC (Canyon City Department of Corrections.See Sis, those Home Ec classes paid off afterall. :D )It is based in part on Lunar Worship, Chucky Cheese and Alfred E. Newman.Picture to follow of course.

And now for something completely different, almost.
_________________________________________________
This is completely without having confered with Chris, but does anyone have a GOOD NAME for our team?Realizing what this is going to unleash, I am, nevertheless, willing to give a one off 15mm conversion of a Goth or LIR, etc to the person who suggests a name that Chris and I agree on(to be presented at Historicon '06).If we come up with a name in the meantime you can still revel in having taken your best shot at us.
Anyone submitting a name for the contest should by way of identification purposes provide make, model, year and VIN number of vehicle you will be attending Historicon in.Do not read the threat of retaliation into this request, it is purely for insuring that the winner and other entrants get theirs, recognition that is.So don't be shy, what do you suggest???
*************************************************
For a limited, Chris and I have agreed to accept unconditional surrender(ie a bye) from the Davids so that they do not have to undergo the pubic humiliation of being skunked by The Imperator and moi. tongue.gif
And yes,I know you think I make a spelling mistake in the last sentence.Naw.

As for the Davids cone of silence, non-wheelbarrow army choice, my money is on either Warring States (Chao) with ally or some flavor of Byzantine. If I had to pin it down further, I'd say Maurikian Byzantine with Khazar ally, which they rate as an A3/A4. That is pure guesswork and speculation on my part, so the amount of the wager would be low.

You may take any legal army/ally choice out of the book. Armies are usually grouped historically, such as is possible, in the inital pools.

Jonathan. Jonathan,
For most people, any legal army list and ally or allies from the book. No restriction on Book or theme, etc.
However, I've placed a special restriction on you - only Class D & E effectiveness armies from the BBDBA army assessment (http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/~kuijt/BBDBA/ArmyAssessment.html) are legal choices! ;)
Hope that helps,
DS
PS - I've also decided to shorten the length of all of TATMNBN official games to 1.5 hours in an effort to shorten the periods of suffering they will have to endure. And give them more time to shop.

No point. I'd just be walking away with my own medal. I really hadn't been living up to my moniker lately, but last night I had a good 6-2 game with Dave S., and a couple of weeks ago my son (Peter "The Cleaver") beat me 7-4. You gotta like a game with 11 dead elements.

A perfectly natural choice David, clearly superior talent should be handicapped to give others a fighting chance... well, the illusion of a chance.

Pebbles? Is this a manifestation of some sick fantasy, wherein I appear as the daughter of Fred and Wilma Flintstone?
Already, my wily partner and I have begun our plan to field a juggernaut which will crush our opposition, without the compassion typically shown by "Dread and Son" .

I can't tell you how often I've been faulted for being too nice....'tis a pity, being this full of pity, in short, pitiful.

Running out of time to get ready for the tournament. Who knew that braiding two leather lariats to tow the deafeated Davids behind your chariot would take so long? :D

After the Davids are crushed and driven before us, I painted up some depressed-looking female figures to represent the Lamentation of the Women.

If you crush and drive us before you, you will be forced to listen to the Lamentation of the Davids. It's happened before -- ask Mark & Mike, who defeated us with Huns (we were Dacians), or Marty and Bob McD, who defeated us with Carthage (we were Aztecs), or Larry and Diceman Rick, who defeated us with AngloNermels (we were Ch'u Chinese). Even now, months or years later, they are all still in therapy. Mark, in particular, has a twitch in his left cheek which starts up whenever he meets someone named David, and Marty still wakes up screaming in the middle of the night.
It is only as a kindness to our opponents that we attempt to ensure they don't have to suffer years of psychic damage; the Gloating of the Davids causes no such permanent injury to the psyche, and so is far easier to recover from.

I know we're not supposed to advertise products here on Fanaticus, but Shervin and I will be selling special "Anti-Lamentation Earplugs" at the flea market. Much cheaper than therapy... I just wish we'd have reason to use them ourselves.
Delayed reply to Jeff Caruso: They're Gepids, not Goths! I regret to inform that they are not done, having been bumped by Poles, Italians, French, Swiss and Mongols in the painting queue (sp?). Having said this, they are next, ahead of renaissance Poles and Ottomans. As soon as they're done, I can send digital pix.

Hi Dave/All
I just sent you an email using the email address identified on the fanaticus profile. Bottomline is I am from CA but have found myself in NVA next weekend and suddenly I have the means to go to Historicon. I am big fan of DBA and if it is possible I would like to sign up for a DBA tournament at Historicon. I plan to go to Historicon Fri-Sat-Sun anyway, but I would like to get a spot on the tournament roster if possible.
Not sure if I got the right POC so if I don't can anyone point me in the right direction.

Thanks for the quick reply. First, no I do not have any DBA armies with me. I was hoping to pick up some at the Convention. I have played (and like to play) Khmer, Norman, Later Sarmatian, Skythian, or Norman but beggars can't be chosy bottomline is I want to play.
I will probably arrive Saturday morning, hopefully I will have time to hit the vendors? before the NICT.
Looking at the events calendar on the webpage you provided the events I would like to shoot for are
Saturday
2Pm - 5pm
The NICT - "Phil and Sue DBA Masters
8pm - 11pm
Britannia AD 43 Mini Campaign
Sunday
9am - Noon
DBA Themes
I will sign-up for these events as soon as I get on site. Thanks again for the quick response you made my day. See you at Historicon.

Ralph, the NICT is an invitational tourney. You have to have won a qualifying tournament to qualify to play. However and having said that, they will use some of us as "filler" to make the bracket numbers come out properly. So you if you haven't won a slot, you still have a chance. Good luck at H'con and I look forward to seeing you.
Don't worry too much about the trash talk that has blown around on the forum as we know each other and enjoy this aspect of the game as well. Heck, I might as well talk big before the games start, 'cause I darned sure won't be able to afterwards... ;)

Ralph, good to know your plans. Let me round out Ed's good comments. As he says, the NICT is our only non-open tournament but the good news is at the same time we have the "not the NICT" tournament which is an open event. I will bring a Norman army that you can use. I am not staying over Sunday but there will be plenty of people at the Themes who will be able to loan you troops.
The DBA events are in the Lampeter Room, just at the front of the Hotel. Across from the registration area.
See you in a few days.

Bob & Ed
Thanks for the amplifying information (my convention newbie status probably shone through there). No worries, invitational or non-invitational, I just want to play. The non-invitational sounds great to me. Thanks, for bringing the Army. You guys have been great. See you at Historicon.

I'd like to report that the Team of " 2006 BC" (Brantley and Caruso) took first place by riding down all our opponents using an all mounted force with a 2 aggression. Unfortunately the results do not make that report possible as we lost narrowly (but consistently) in all bounds. We were even shoved out of last place by other more cunning players.
What did we learn? The scribes are compiling the events now for an indepth analysis so that Team 2006 BC can begin the finger pointing with a firm data base behind them.
First reports have shown that the BLACK DIE thrown by me averaged below all probability tables. This could be an attempt at a gracious coverup by the Imperator for my play. Film at 11:00.

It can be stated now, with complete assurance of the facts, that Team 2006 BC lost BBDBA with their all mounted army due to the largest command carrying the wrong color standard into battle. While it was suspected that a problem might develop over morale and the general ability to prosecute a battle plan ( attack and roll 6's), the consequence of fighting under the wrong standard has been identified as the ONE TRUE EXCUSE for underperformance of Team 2006 BC at Historicon.
The acceptance of this truth takes nothing away from our opponent's lucky die rolling in setting terrain as defenders. They are free to continue under the false assumption that they were the better tacticians, whatever. Just wait till...

Teams were arranged into three groups of four teams based on chronology, except that Classical Indian and Characene were swapped in an effort to balance the groups more evenly and make better sense in general.
Following the initial round robin group stage, the three group winners and the best second place finisher were seeded based on points and moved to the semifinals for elimination play.
This event marked a couple of firsts for Big Battle DBA tournament play… this is the first time we had multiple armies with scythed chariots, and even a Seleucid civil war (if not the exact same list a vs. c). It was also the first time we had two teams play with an army that had two allies.
Thanks to everyone who participated, and sorry about the delay in posting the results.

Why didn't the number one seed play number four, and number two play number three? This gives the number one player a reward for a superior record, having an advantage of a battle against the "weaker" of the armies that made the finals. Look at how the NBA handles playoffs.

From reading the the lists it is easy to see that Bostwicks #4 and Davids #1 played each other in the round robin. So the split did not have them again in the first round. How does the NBA handle this case? If only the DBA players got the same salaries for playing games :)
By the way, my fault for the delay in David getting back the scores.

As Bob pointed out, because the highest 2nd place finisher was in the same group as the #1 seed during round robin play, it seemed like the best choice would be to pair the semifinals so that they didn't play. There was no avoiding it for the finals of course.
If that was not an issue, it would have been #1 vs. #4 and #2 vs. #3 as you suggested.
