Care to tell us what army the Davids will be playing? ;)

(DK recently confessed to me you haven't finished painting it yet!)

Bob McDonald and I will NOT be bringing Hannibal and the Jumbo Boys again.

We'll just do our usual...wait until the last minute...look at our collections and pick something.

Seemed to work well last year! :D

Well, I'd love there to get my butt pasted by some of the best players in the Eastern reaches of the nation.

I'm still waiting for DK and DS to set a real challenge for themselves and take a wheel barrow army to the event. (That is a wheel barrow on the BBDBA page, ain't it? Damn modem connection.)

Aztecs and Tlaxies were a wheelbarrow army in some versions of the BBDBA Document (we started painting them long before 2.2 gave Wb a chance in BGo). The only problem was, when we played them, we LOST a game! Imagine the horror!

But it is very easy for us to take a wheelbarrow to the Doubles -- all we have to do is put a wheelbarrow marker on the army we're going to take, a few days before! We control the document, we have the power! :D

I'll be teaming up with my son for BBDBA. And given Tad's aggresive playing style, we'll be looking forward to some real carnage. We may not win, but there will be destruction everywhere.

Oh the Humanity. Actually, if the last two were Expendables, say scythed chariots, and they got the same attack roll, then both of them would die. At least that's how I remember the rule.

It's a small world, after all..

Yep, that's one of my brothers. About a decade and a half ago, one of my friends phoned me up and asked if I had a brother named Steve, because he was on ESPN2 at that moment.

Do you remember the name of the magazine? I'd be interested in reading the article.

DK,

The article was in the Dec 2004 issue of SKIING,WINTER ADVENTURE magazine, beginning page 144.

I'll bring it with me to Historicon.I asked the doc if I could take it.

Actually since you are not mentioned by name I wasn't sure if it was your brother,eh?

Especially as on page 148 it talks about Steve's personality and I quote "Steve was just a kid when he came here to drive, but he was charming, intelligent, and good with people-the Tom Cruise ofIsland Lake...".

So you can't be related,eh? :D tongue.gif :D

http://www.frostjedi.com/phpbb/images/smiles/rotfsmiley.gif Cloning is allowed if a player is directly 9 base widths behind the deployment edge of the battlefield and not within 900 paces of two battlefield edges unless one has a river no longer than 1.25 the distance between its ends extending 600 -700 paces toward the notional bisection of the center of the furthest Oasis. Ed... must... die... </font>
Ah...a weakness! Can the king be knocked off his clone? </font>
Oh, that's some good punning.
:D

Keep it up boys and the Davids will be on their knees, and then some of us mere mortals can swoop in and win the title.

Sorry Marty.

Sorry, I do those only for events I run myself :(

Maybe Marty will bring one from the launch pad for the BB. This year mine are from the Wolverine Tower at a major midwest university.

Sorry Marty. </font>
Are you suggesting that they'll end up getting knead? Now that's a twist that I didn't see. Can they rise above it, or is thay only D.K.'s blood pressure? Or will they succumb to the needling? Will their hopes, and army, get rolled out flat and toasted? Are they glutens for PUNishment? Do we really need to fear David nee Kuijt?

Ed must die? Well of course. Three times just for movement PIPs each turn, unless Joe also dies some. And then there's a die for every bound of every combat.

Ed, I'm sorry to do this, but you are suspended for 20 games of BBDBA for not controlling your punsmanship. ;)

But I have good punmenship... :(
Besides, it's all Chris's (Hail Imperator!) fault. He started it. tongue.gif

BTW, you'll be happy to note that I have been painting up some more sheep so that I can um, flock my bases properly...

Let the beer and the banter flow!

And consider chosing a nick name for each person in the touney before you finsh up. I like Ed 'Marshal' Dillon to start. Only fitting for the pun master.

DS will post the stats when he recovers his brain.

Very short summary:

There were 20 teams overall, by far the most ever.

The games were all tremendous fun, at least the ones I participated in or saw happening.

The teams were split into two groups of 6 and two groups of 4; one winner advanced out of each group.

The group winners were:
</font> Darius Kuijt and Darius Schlanger, playing triple Later Achaemenid Persian</font> Jeff Caruso and Chris Brantley, playing triple Later Imperial Roman</font> Roland Fricke and Jon Baldwin, playing triple Early Burgundian</font> David Bostwick and Jason Bostwick, playing double West Frankish with Viking ally.</font>
In the semifinals the Bostwicks disposed of Jeff Caruso and the Imperator -- I'm sorry I didn't get to see any of that game. The other semifinal game was between the Army of Two Dariuses (Darii?) and Roland and Jon's Burgundians. The Burgundians, fearing (respecting?) the maneuver ability of the Dread Darii, refused both flanks with bow-supported artillery batteries and advanced with extreme strength up the middle with dismounting knights. The battle was very tense and crowded and tight, but their attack couldn't get fully formed and desperate maneuvering by the Darii kept things tight until advancing pressure on the Burgundian C-in-C's flank forced them to start taking risks, and finally their C-in-C started taking casualties. It was two elements from breaking when the battle was called for time.

The finals were thus three Davids and a Jason -- Darius, Darius, D. Bostwick, and Jas. Bostwick. We fought the finals on Saturday morning. This was perhaps the most exciting game of the whole tournament, a classic battle of power against maneuver. The wall of Frankish knights went charging forward, trying to get to grips, constrict space, and cause casualties before the Persian maneuver command came streaming in to reinforce their bigpip command. Things looked very (very!) touch-and-go for a number of bounds, but finally the trickling reinforcements started blocking up the holes that the Franks were causing, and numbers, mobility, and pip advantage started to tell. The Franks caused many more casualties, but the Persians could afford to lose far more (breaking both commands on that flank would have required 13 elements lost, considering that two were Scythed Chariots). The pip advantage was also tremendous -- by the time the Frankish assault was starting to lose momentum there were elements from all three Persian commands fighting against them, and every single pip on the Persian side (all three dice) were being applied to counteract the one high-pip dice of the Franks. Flesh and blood can only stand so much, and eventually the Franks started going down, and doing so their line became broken up and more fragmented, and more vulnerable, and the end came.

The Vikings and the Frankish foot never got engaged against the weaker Persian micro-walls of kardakes and Greek mercenaries; late in the game the Vikings did manage to recoil a pair of Persian psiloi.

This was another tremendous tournament. I think the quality of play has really gone up -- a couple of years ago there were fewer teams, and many of them had much less skill. This tournament we had no enemy that didn't present us with a difficult battle and a difficult tactical problem -- every battle was risky and close, and could well have gone either way. Big Battle Doubles is still the coolest game on earth.

Thanks to everyone who participated! It was a wonderful turnout for a fantastic competition. We had 20 teams (40 participants) for what surely must have been not only the coolest game on earth, but the biggest BBDBA event in our history!!!

Here's a breakdown of the 20 teams, and how they were split into groups based on period. Group winners advanced to single elimination semi-finals and final rounds.

There were ten 3x armies, nine 2x armies with ally, and one 1x army with two allies.

I will post detailed results later...

But I'll offer up my own and that is Hank "The Dreaded" Drapalski. He's big, he's bad. Let's get that man some tights, a cloak, and a black mask and he's ready for the studio wrastlin' circuit...
