View Full Version : DBA in wierd places...

This Saturday, Nikolai Tvilde and myself had the wierdest wargaming experience ever. We had a game of DBA on national radio, broadcasted directly..! :D
The game was an attempt to recreate the battle of Benevenutum 275BC between Pyrrhus and the Roman army. It ended with a Pyrrhic victory...
What kind of wierd places have you played DBA? I'd be glad to receive your stories...

Well done! I'm sure your radio audience thoroughly marvelled at the magnificient paint-jobs and terrain too. ;) And, just think: The accounts of your game will continue in perpetuity, if you buy the (probably inaccurate) theory that says radio waves carry on out in to space indefinitely.
The only unusual venue in which I have played DBA was aboard a Washington State ferry-boat, plying the lovely waters of Puget Sound (a body of water here near Seattle that is not unlike some of your fjords there in Norway). That was years ago, so I have no idea which armies were involved. Persians with Lycian Marines, I hope!

I really am disappointed that the Norwegians, between them, have not YET put together a Viking army! ;) <sigh> What are we going to do with you? Has Nikolai decimated his legions to punish them? When does the OMSK go into a syndicated series? In English? mvh,

At the moment I actually hold the Roman army in disgracful captivity. :D The forum at OMSK is always open to English/French speakers and others. I'd welcome more foreign action. smile.gif

I've heard that the Air force refuses to fly B-52's over Minnesota for fear of the damage caused by mosquitos trying to mate with them.

We use a cloth 'board' and felt terrain. DBA has been to Georgian Bay, the Okeefenokee swamp, and the Suwanee, Altamaha, Ohoopee, Manistee and Current rivers. Oddly enough, we seldom use rivers as a terrian type.

Just spent a long weekend in Maine and can report that the skeets there file flight plans with the FAA.
Speaking of DBA in in wierd places, I noticed a club in New Orleans called DBA. A peek in the door revealed a music venue, rather than a gaming emporium.

Well the most unique is that have heard about is that a client of mine was a Coast Guard Commander (now retired) when his ship left port to conduct cruises in the Gulf of Mexico, he and a couple of crewmen carried DBA armies to pass the time.

Probably the later as the light weight composites in the ISS probably are not ferrous.

At one time in the 1980s, I was part of a group that used to play Dungeons and Dragons on a local public access TV channel. Never thought of trying it on the radio.
I recently took four armies across country to introduce my young nephews to DBA -- the troops needed a little repair when we got there, and a little more when I got home, but otherwise the project was a great success. I don't know if I am ready to bring my troops to the arctic circle the way Paul Hannah has, but game events south of there now seem somewhat more accessible....
I haven't actually played DBA in any especially creative places, but I have an army that has been on quite an odyssey. Last year I bought some figures from a British painter on eBay, then waited a good five weeks for them to arrive. The delay was immediately explained when I saw that the Royal Mail had misrouted the package for some reason...TO THE FALKLAND ISLANDS!
So now I have two armies that have been to the Southern Hemisphere, the Gepids that I purchased from a New Zealander, and the Camillan Romans who had an overnight stay in Port Stanley. I wonder if I can outdo them someday by playing some DBA in Tierra Del Fuego....

A year or so ago my son and I brought my Romans and Carthaginians to Orlando, FL. We played games in the lobby of the motel, while waiting between games of my other son's soccer tournament. Not so unusual you say? Consider this - here we are at the vacation capital of the world, and we are in the motel lobby playing a game! We did get some good comments, though, and met a couple from England who had a friend that played there. My friends at the Kingdom of the Mouse didn't even notice our absence.

NHMGS had its annual wargaming demo day at the Museum of Flight (http://www.museumofflight.org/Portal.asp?Flash=True) at Boeing Field, here in Seattle on Saturday.

In the overview shot above, is an info table and behind it a MUSTANGS air-game (RAF vs. Doodlebugs), a Colonials game (Brits and Zulus), some boardgaming and, in the far distance a DBA table.
Here, Dave Schueler chats with a couple youngsters. (My grandstand for our 1930's Air Racing game can be seen in the back left of the photo.)

The emphasis is on PR for the hobby, so we gladly interrupt games to give 30-second overviews of what's going on to interested passersby, or, it they're so inclined, to let them jump in and play.
DBA, of course, lends itself well to demo-gaming, so the "Nevsky Ice Arena" and another DBA game-board got steady use, both by NAGS regulars seen here...

...and by some newbies, both adults and kids.
As far as gaming venues go, we feel very privileged to set up our games surrounded by such history. And, then when you think about it, DBA games under this massive, Cold War spy-plane (SR-71 Blackbird) really does qualify for "DBA in Weird Places".

This year's NHMGS game day at the Museum of Flight was even cooler than last year, as we were actually UNDER the rear of the Blackbird -- last year we were forward and slightly outside of the actual plane.
And perhaps even more remarkable, we ran an honest-to-Barker Mound Builder Civil War, using two Eureka 300 Club IV/10 Mound Builder American DBA armies. Has anyone ever run or heard of such a match-up in the long annals of DBA history? Since no figures that I know of were available for the list until Eureka made these, it may be that this is a unique moment in DBA history.

As you may have read in other threads, the "Calgary Camp Followers" are hosting an outdoor DBA event this Saturday in Calgary. It's a little added "ambiance", they say, for the suggested theme of cold weather armies.
And, yeah, cold weather geek that I am, I'll be there. So, what's the forecast, you ask? Looks as if it won't be too cold, but Saturday's forecast (http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/ab-52_metric_e.html) does call for "periods of snow". So, I figure, it's a good thing I put flags on all my Hussite WWg's: I'll still be able to see them as the snow piles up.
But, now where'd my die go?

You better hope it's cold -- because January in Calgary, it is either cold or it is the Chinook. And if it's the Chinook, then your flags on all your Hussite WWg's is the wrong choice -- the wind will blow them all over. As for your dice, if you don't nail it down, it will be on its way to Saskatchewan.

Depends on surface area, Paul. When I was in high school in Lethbridge, there was a picture in the Lethbridge Herald taken up into the sky, showing a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" plywood flying a couple of hundred feet over the roofs and telephone wires of downtown. Some guys working construction on the roof of an apartment building on the other side of the Oldman River (a mile or so away) had lost it. It flew across town and landed in a cow pasture on the other side.
The main entertainment of the time for schoolkids was watching old people trying to struggle upwind across crosswalks before the lights changed. That and bike sailing by unzipping your jacket, putting your hands in your jacket pocket, and spreading your arms to make a sail.

Here's a shot of me in that zany, outdoor gaming event in snowy Calgary last weekend, hosted by the "Calgary Camp Followers".
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd69/Paul_A_Hannah/Calgary08.jpg
The official temp at the airport (although it's always colder at airports, right?) during the time we were outside was -10C (+14F), so not terribly cold, and, fortunately, only light winds. We set up three tables / games outside, all on a cold-weather theme. (A few others remained inside.) Both DBA and HOTT. It was a whole lot of fun. Surreal. Lots of laughs. After 30 or 40 minutes, as the breeze picked up, and we started to get chilled, we gladly retired to the warmth inside.
The games played very quickly, as you might imagine. The laminated cheet-sheets proved really handy. The snow actually aided play: Dice never rolled off the tables. They just rolled over a couple times and then stuck in the snow. If you were moving an element and then wondered where it had started, the original position was immediately obvious from the absence of snow!
Thanks to Don Ray and Sean "Spanikopites" Devitt for making it all happen. We had been gaming inside for a couple hours, but Don kept reminding folks that at 1:30pm those who wanted to would take tables, chairs, game-boards and minis outside and set up in the hobby shop's parking lot.
Fortunately, no damage at all to the minis, their bases, or even the terrain from the moisture. We did our best to blow off all the snow before we took them back inside. I thought at the time, though, that even if I had to rebase the three armies of mine that were out there, it would have been worth it. It was that much fun.
Several more pictures of the event, courtesy of Mike Johnson's father, are currently linked on the DBA Resource Page. If you didn't see them, here (http://armiesobscura.blogspot.com/) they are.
Let's do it again next January!

I wonder what my opponent, Neil, thought of all this zaniness. He had just moved to Calgary from Ottawa two weeks ago. He had dropped in at The Sentry Box to check out the local gaming scene. He just played his first DBA games in years. And, now here (http://armiesobscura.blogspot.com/2008/01/pauls-hott-nazi-penguins-up-to-no-good.html) he is, sitting out in the snow, playing his first-ever HOTT game.I'd love to know what he told his old gaming pals back in Ottawa about the crazies in Calgary.

It was back in April of '05. I think Chris Brantley still has pictures of it. IIRC, no one was injured, but the minis didn't fare nearly as well as ours did last week in the snows of Calgary.

Dunno about tall tales, but at least one game from the Aztec Big Mouth Tlatoani Tournament-Campaign had to play its last 20 minutes in the dark. I think the bout was between Sean Spencer (Puppy People, or Dawg Peeps, or Peep Doggity-Dog) and Spencer Ginder (Tlaxcalans). The only emergency light near the game cut out after the first five minutes, so I think they must have done the measurement and stuff mostly by braille. They had fun, though. I think. Hard to tell, in the dark. Then I had to do up the scores by pen light.
Someone (Jim Kaspar?) took a picture of DS and I after the two campaign-tournaments ended. Maybe he'll publish it? The flash left us blind for two or three minutes.

Yea and I lost that last game...or at least Sean told me I did....I think his young eyes were working a lot better than mine. Had to rely on a foggy blue light from Alan's cell phone. Amazing how accurate his Bow were at night!!!
You're right about the fun though...

In case anyone was wondering, the flash from that shot left us stumbling into walls for 15 minutes...

Salutations, gentlefolk,
A couple of times in the fast few weeks, I've had some business to transact in the courthouse of Delaware County, Pennsylvania (directly SSW of Philadelphia), and I wonder if some Fanatici might be up for a "Meet the Medes in Media" tournament sometime in the future. If so, I shall set about organizing one.
Meanwhile, the Lansdowne Games Day is this Saturday, March 29th!
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
The Garden Church in Lansdowne hosts
the spring's Lansdowne Games Day on March 29th,
for grownups, and children of all ages !
(although we hope they're old enough to realize
the playing pieces aren't edible)
This will run from 11:30 AM to 9 PM, at The Garden Church,
at 82 North Lansdowne Avenue, at the corner of Stratford Ave,
in Lansdowne, Pa.
For directions by car or SEPTA, see:
http://www.thegardenchurch.org/directions.html
Among the games played at our earlier gatherings were:
Blue Moon City, Goa, Ticket to Ride, Puerto Rico, Daytona 500,
Balloon Cup, Cosmic Encounter, and Winners' Circle
If you'd like to run a demonstration game, tournament,
miniatures battle, etc please let us know what you'll need
in table space or other facilities,
If we can fit you in, we will.
There's no admission charge,
(though contributions to help cover the church's expenses
will be welcome)
We're making the Lansdowne Game Days a regular happening,
to bring people together, from Delaware County
and the entire Philadelphia area,
for friendly competition, fellowship and fun.
Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

Here's another installment of "DBA in a Weird Place"...

David Kuijt and Paul Hannah are ready for an "Armies of the Americas" DBA game, with roar and the mists of Snoqualmie Falls in the background. David (left) has his magnificient "Gladiator" Aztecs and Paul his "Eureka" NW Indians. DK is out for ENFILADE this coming weekend, and so my wife and I were showing him some of the local sights. Here's another shot:

The other tourists in this overlook found it all rather puzzling.

How did they play while simultaneously holding up the board? Seems risky. :)
You just needed someone to periodically launch giant foam dice over the falls.

Greetings to all and sundry;
Although not actually playing DBA, I am at least accessing the forum from about 180 feet above the central Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by a really, really large amount of water (as will not surprise anyone who has seen the Atlantic. I am reliably informed that the water here is aproximately 3000 meters deep. Now I wish I had brought an element for DBA, so I could drop it overboard -- another 12 cruises and Mermen down there could play with the fishes.
We were supposed to arrive in Bermuda today, but the captain of the cruise ship Explorer has decided to wait until tomorrow -- Hurricane Bertha is being recalcitrant, thereby taking one of our Bermuda days away.
The water is absolutely amazingly blue.:2up
Well, here we come with the start of the DBArcelona team of "DBA in Weird Places" batch :D Pubs and the like had already been tried (including a battle at 4AM in a public square since the floor tiles were 60x60) but we had yet to play on a moving vehicle
Here we are playing in the bar of the train between Valencia and Barcelona, on our return trip from the 1st DBA Valencia tournament. MIR vs Numidians.

Don Ray from Calgary, in Seattle for the ENFILADE weekend, and I set up a game of DBA this Memorial Day under the guns of the USS Boston (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd69/Paul_A_Hannah/DSCF0010-3.jpg), an armored cruiser (http://www.spanamwar.com/boston.htm) that saw action in the Battle of Manila, 1898. I'd say this qualifies as DBA in a weird place.

The ship's displaced guns are located in a park about a mile from our home. Don fielded his new Timurid army (Alan Toulier) [left] against my elderly Ottomans (Mikes Models).
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd69/Paul_A_Hannah/DSCF0022-1.jpg
Try as I might, I could bring neither the Ottomans' bombard nor the Boston's 8-inch gun (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd69/Paul_A_Hannah/DSCF0021-2.jpg) to bear on Mr. Timur's vulnerable position, directly in front of Jumbo. In the end, Don's lovely Jumbo would "sink" the Ottoman Pasha for a 3G-2 victory.

We of the NW Washington area should gather for a DBA day on board a Seattle Ferry, say the Bremerton run, and play on the ferry throughout the day.
