Sean here from the Sentry Box in Calgary. I was encouraged to start posting regarding our monthly DBA Drop-Ins. So please bear with my gratuitous accounts of valour. I hope to ensnare more Calgary and area Fanatici to join the struggle.
October the 16th was a cool day in town so not suprising we had only Cory, William and myself. But 2 newly painted armies took to the field in some dramatic fights.
I was itching to try out my new Welsh army (the early list) so when William arrived with his Han Chinese we decided that it was time to regame the little known Chinese invasion of Wales. Now we've been running these sessions since April and have been pretty historical about the matches, so this was our most flagrant non-historical 'open' match yet. William joked that by playing this match we were bound to attract a purist decrying our 'fantasy' battle. But at least then we'd have a third in the game. :D As it was the Welsh played it safe, stuck to the nasty hills, avoided the death-dealing chariots and horse and in a series of bad-going scrums eliminated the stubborn Han crossbows.
Cory arrived with his Vikings, fresh from the slaughter at FallCon. We matched up the cocky Welsh with the grim Norsemen. Once again the unimaginative Welsh general (cough-cough) stuck with what worked and enticed the Norse to chase him in the woods and steep hills. It was a hard fought thing until the Welsh charged the Norse line downhill and scored 4 kills. Thanks Cory, 7-2 is my best spread. I await your revenge.
Cory delivered up the beautifully painted Georgian army William commissioned. (William- you need to get some pictures of that group in the Eye-candy section.) Cory and William with respective Vikings and Georgians 'recreated' a Georgian attack on a Byzantine outpost garrisoned by Norse mercenaries. Yeah...that's the story. (Can't be less believable then the Han in Wales.)
The battle opened with a sudden storming of the BUA by the Georgian foot. Cory immediately dispatched forces to retake the town, giving us all a chuckle about Vikings looting their own real estate. Cory called it 'resource re-allocation' or some such thing. Cory pushed his right wing ahead trying to pin Williams force behind the city. He was hampered by a line of plucky and pseriously psuccessul psiloi.
It was at this point the Georgian knights hit the Norse center. The punch-through took place and the Georgian knights rolled over the Norse.
We all learned something that day. It confirmed to Cory that he was indeed a combined arms/light troops kind of guy. With Aux and Horse he's the very devil playing his Thracians. The Vikings are deadly but slow.
William I think was well reassured that his researches were correct. The combined arms of the fiesty Georgians are going to suite his tactical acuity well.
Myself, I love the monotype. If I play combined arms, I usually wind up with my psiloi facing knights and my pikes in bad going. At least with a horde of warband, someplace along the line they just might have the advantage.
Next DBA Drop-In November 20th. Email events@sentrybox.com to get info. New armies as well. Mike, dude, we missed you.
