DBA Tournament at The Siege of Augusta (Augusta, Georgia, USA), January 14-16, 2005:
A DBA tourney officiated by Gray Strickland will be held during the Saturday afternoon session of The Siege of Augusta. Gray ran a tourney at last year's Siege and at the past two Cowpens cons and they all worked out well. Rudy Scott Nelson of Time Portal Hobbies will be sponsoring this tournament and will likely be donating a prize (this is yet to be confirmed, but in the past he has donated a complete unpainted army of the winner's choice). The tournament will run from 1:00 until around 6:00
This year I will be assisting with some of the logistics and set up. The following format will be used for the tournament. This is basically the same format used during the last Cowpens con. This is meant to be a very friendly competition that is open to all skill levels, including first time DBA players.
You do not need to bring an army to participate, but if possible bring one or more matched pairs of historical armies along with terrain and mat for their battle. For each army bring a small card or paper with its information from the army list written on it. If you only have one army then bring it along and we will try to find a match for it. Note that other players will be using the armies that you bring, so if you are uncomfortable with this you should not bring your armies. For every player that brings a matched pair one other player can come empty handed, so we tend to have more than enough armies. Mats up to 32 inches wide may be used (assuming 15mm armies). While we expect most people to bring 15mm armies, matched pairs of other scales may be used as well. Having measuring devices to go with such armies may be helpful.
Before we begin the tournament each person who brought a matched pair will lay out the elements for each army and the available terrain next to a mat. Players will sit at any one of the mats for their first battle (or we may draw lots or something to determine initial seating). For the second and subsequent battle each player moves to the chair to their right, with those at the end of the line of tables moving to the other side of the table. The armies and terrain pieces stay with the mat. This way each game played will be against a different opponent and using a different army. Each player will play four games, with the NASAMW scoring system being used to determine the winner.
In additiona to the tournament, I will be running an eight-army Hannibal versus Rome scenario on Saturday Morning from 9:00-12:00.
For more information on The Siege of Augusta convention see the following we site, which seems to only work intermitently:

Had a lot of players last year and it was not set up this nice or even advertised. Of course I will provide prizes for 1st and 2nd place.

Chris, I spoke too soon. My deployment date moved up, so Seige of Augusta DBA will have to wait a year or so.

Rick Parrish and I will be making the trek north!
(Though Rick plans to play Warrior/WRG 7th if they get enough players for a tourney. Just for that I'm making HIM drive!)
Chris, what's the usual mix of armies?
Perhaps I can provide an unusal pairing to the mix.

We tend to get a good mix, although Biblical and the Americas tend to be rare.

Unfortunatly those are rare for me as well.
If any of the Tallahassee guys show up though the Biblicals will be covered.

Well I hope to have a surprise at Augusta. In addition to the Crusader/Saracen armies, Old Glory 15mm will be releasing Sejuk Turks this week. I hope to have some over-night shipped to me for the show. As well as 15mm WW2 and more of the Crusaders.
I have large stocks of JR miniature terrain and Osprey, Casemate and Concord books as well.

I just had a disturbing phone call!
Rumour has it that the DBA Organizer has backed out due to the convention asking him to PAY for his tables?
Now I'm getting this 3rd hand but at the moment my travel plans are on hold.
What's going on up there? If the problem is the organizer is a dealer and THAT is the issue somehow then let me know.
I can't believe I'm saying this...I may volunteer to take over the event as long as they have table space.

As for as I know , Gray of my group is running the DBA tourney. He did it last year and for two years at Cowpens. he is riding with me to the show.
So unless Chris knows something that I do not, there are no plans to cancel the tourney and I have not been told about being charged for tables? I have already paid for my FOUR tables and it would not affect the tourney in any way.
Where are you getting the info?

Hey Rudy,
I played (rather poorly, now that I think of it) in last year's Siege tourney. I am flying down again this year to visit my buddy Jason Mirosavich, so we will be in attendence on Saturday.
I know in the past you have done Old Glory DBA armies, breaking open the bags. Is there any way I can REQUEST a certain army or armies? Or do you have a pretty full selection already?
Sorry for the off-topic, crassly commerical post, guys! Not 100% sure if Jason and I are playing in the tourney again this year. I like to let him choose what we do since he doesn't get to go to as many cons as I do.
Looking forward to seeing everyone, again, though...

I will be bringing close to 80 DBA army sets from Essex, Old Glory and Corvus Belli. I got in some of their (CB) factory DBA armies last week. I will also bring some boxes of loose to make DBA armies on the spot.

This is not the case.
I have been in contact with both Gray, the DBA organizer, and Jim Birdseye, the conference organizer, and the tournment is on.

Whew!
Turns out my 3rd hand info was wrong!
It was the DBM guys who have the issue not the DBA event after all.
Maybe a few of those folks will try DBA instead! ;)
Looks like I'm driving north Friday! :D
And for scaring people I'll bring along a few extra prizes (Osprey books) to donate.

Jason I will be recycling the Polybian Romans and Later Carthaginians from my morning big battle scenario. If there seems to be enough armies without them I will pull them out since playing them may not be so interesting for those who just used them in the morning game.
The morning game, by the way, will begin around 9:00. I may not get in until late Friday night, so if people don't see me on Friday it doesn't mean that I won't be ready for Saturday Morning.

Just got home from Siege a few minutes ago after a long eight hour drive! I had a good time in the DBA event going 2-2 and meeting Chris Pagano among others.
One loss was to Chris who managed to get his bows to avoid my blades as my scattered army starved for pips.
The other was lost when I sat down at the wrong location at the table. After the first game we got up and moved one position to the right and played the next army.
Early Libyans vs NKE is hardly an even fight even with five ~40x40mm patches of bad going one element apart across the middle of the board. My opponent did exactly the right strategy. Pinned with his chariots and cleared my Ps from the BG with his bows. Once his blades got through I was toast.
But I was there for fun so no big whoop.
I over heard the final head count from two of the staff members this morning, 275. They seemed to be very pleased.
The variety of games was pretty good but the staff needs to work on organization. The program was in three parts. One sheet had the games listed, one had the table assignments and then you had a third with the table map. Registration only gave me a games list. Since its all in one room it's not a big deal but the GMs had some problems figuring out which tables belonged to them.
I heard there was supposed to be a Flea Market. I didn't see one.
Rudy was the only dealer with anything for us Ancients guys but he had plenty of his 'all option' DBA army packs and some of the new Corvis Belli boxed armies. Very nice! Wish I could paint well enough to do them justice.
Hope you guys can come on down to Tampa for Recon (http://hmgs-south.com) in April!

Good low key event. A reported 250 attendees. Strange show in that not one dealer in GW products. The first time I have seen that in several years. Also with no GW there was 40K or LoTW tournaments/games.
Some clarifications on Martian who was new to the show. There was ONE! flea market table but you had to ask to kinow what it was. The round table by the door.
Also the Quartermaster with the Falcon UK Ancients was there but he does not yet do DBA Armies. I bought some Blemmye, Aztecs, Taracans, Chanca, Tlasascans Malay/Java and a few other troops to turn into DBA army sets.
I am also working with Kai the owner of Quartermaster/Falcon UK on a new casting line which will be out by SummerFall if things go right. I enjoyed the show. It was a great way to start out the New convention year.

Chris, are you planning on doing a tourney report for the main page?
I'd love to hear comments from some of the other players.
I'd also like to know what the other two boards had on them and if players thought the match-up interesting.
In case you don't have it:
Board 1: Armies provided by Marty Schmidt
II/58 Alan 1x2LH(Gen), 5x2LH, 3x3Kn, 2x4Bd, 1x2Ps.
vs
IV/55a Ottoman 1x3Cv(Gen), 1x3Cv, 8x2LH, 2x2Ps
Board 2: ???
Board 3: Armies provided by Marty Schmidt
I/61b Early Carthage 1x3Cv(Gen), 1xHCH, 1x3Cv, 1x2LH, 4x4Sp, 1x3Ax, 1x4Wb, 2x2Ps
vs
II/27b Pyrrhic 1x3Kn(Gen), 1x3Cv, 1x2LH, 1xEl, 4x4Pk, 2x4Sp, 1x4Ax, 1x2Ps
Board 4: Lybians vs NKE?
Board 5: NKE vs Hyksos? (Fear the Horde!)

Thanks to everyone for an enjoyable tournament. All my opponents were fun to play against. Thanks as well to Time Portal Hobbies for being so generous with prizes. My new Hittite Empire army will provide an opponent for the NKE I just finished painting.
Thankfully shooting on the rear did not rear its' ugly head in any of my games!
Regarding the overall con organization, Martian's comments are accurate. It has been like that for the last four years I have attended. I don't think it is going to change. :(

I also had a great time, and thanks to Gray and Chris for organizational duties and Rudy for his generosity with prizes and patience to assemble two DBA armies for me from Old Glory bags.
I can help you with the mystery tables, as I played both: They were two Medieval Scandinavian civil wars -- Union vs. Swedes on Tables #2 and #3.
The format was fun, but I have a couple tweaks I'd like to suggest:
1. When you reach the end of the table on a rotation, go back to the other end ON THE SAME SIDE. This will have the effect of two separate parallel lines rotating in circles. Why? Well, it maximizes the number of matchups the player gets to experience -- they will never be on the same board twice.
2. If you have two of the same matchup in your lineup, ensure that the sides are flipped. So, if is Romans vs. Carthaginians, have the Romans on the "north" side of the table in one game, make sure they are on the "south" side of the table in the other. Why? It will prevent the player using the same army against the same opponent in the tourney.
The reason I say this is here is what happened to me.
Game One: Table 1 "south" side. I played the Ottomans against Jason's Alans and lost.
Game Two: I rotated around the table to the north side, once again playing Ottomans vs. Alans, only this time I was the Alans.
Game Three: I rotated to Table 2, Medieval Scandinavian Danish Union vs. Swedes. The Danes were on the North side and I played them.
Game Four: I rotated to Table 3, the same matchup, playing the Danes again vs. the Swedes.
So, you see what can happen...7 tables, but I really played only two matchups...
No sour grapes -- I had a blast! I just feel the primary attraction of this type of format is the variety of armies and opponents you play. The above tweaks I think will ensure the most variety...

Thanks for the suggestions Mike. I'll incorporate them into our future tournaments. I will also remember to write down what armies were used.
Here are the final results. NASAMW scoring was used, with the top 7 players listed below. (Final Rank. Name; Game 1, Game 2, Game 3, Game 4; Total):
1. Jason Milosovich; 22, 24, 24, 24; 94
2. Doug Lefler; 24, 23, 2, 23; 72
3. Kyle Burley; 23, 25, 22, 0; 70
4. Mike Demanna; 2, 21, 21, 24; 68
4. Chris Pagano; 23, 20, 3, 22; 68
6. Paul Clay; 0, 3, 24, 22; 49
6. Marty Schmidt; 22, 1, 23, 3; 49
The players ranked 1 & 2 each received an unpainted all-options DBA army donated by Rudy Scott Nelson of Time Portal Hobbies. The players ranked 3 & 4 each received an Osprey book donated by Marty Schmidt (Mike and I rolled for the book and Mike won).
I would like to thank all of the participant for a low-key fun event!

Thanks to NASAMW Deep South for donating the books. The Hittite Empire (I/24a) army I won (donated by Time Portal Hobbies) was cleaned & primed yesterday & went under the brush early this morning.
Anyone know of a source for Hittite clothing?
