Ah, life is good.
At Historicon, my offspring (the legendary 9-year-old, as in PB's claim that any x-year-old can learn DBA) became interested in "Dad's game". McDonald the Younger has been a HeroClix man for some time now, but suddenly, he insisted (to the Old Man's dismay) on playing in the Sunday themes.
Well.
A couple of nights ago, he played his fourth DBA game (after the three in the themes). A nine-elements-on-a-side Hoplite bash (all spears all the time, no terrain, to make a straightforward training scenario). Got his head handed to him, strictly based on the dice, since it was a no-skill, line-up-and-bash scenario.
Tonight we switched to an all-light-horse army, 12 elements, and he insisted on deploying the camp he bought with the gift certificate he won in the themes.
He lost two elements in the first combat bound and started to gripe. I said "Never give up, never surrender!" Next bound he kills one of mine. Next bound the score goes to 3-3, but one of the dead is his general. Panic. But you have to lose more ... hang in there.
He rolls a 6 for PIPs, moves 3 groups, and by dint of a couple of double overlaps, door-closings, and such (plus the dreaded Kid's Luck) ... he loses a fourth element, but kills three more of mine.
Final score 6-4G. Whew! Well done, young sir!
Tomorrow, out come the k'niggits .... I think Mom is going to be seeing a lot less of both of her "boys" for a while.
