13. Alex Bostwick I/16 Hittite Old Kingdom 22 pts
14. Jonathan Bostwick I/2b Early Egyptian 5 pts

Theme Notes:

14 participants -- best yet for a theme event run at Fall In.

Nate Morris won the Butcher award in the theme with an astounding 26 elements killed (friendly and enemy) in four games. 1-4, 4-3, 2-5, and 4-3.

Only one player needed a loaner army.

Nobody stated a preference for 24" boards, so all battles were fought on 32" square boards. Winning army - Nubians - had no mounted, but was successful on the 32" boards.

Nobody used a BUA in any of the battles.

In one battle (Alex Bostwick vs. Bob Spencer) Alex lost his camp twice, and still won the game. Bob took his camp, then left the camp to attack a psiloi, then the psiloi drove off the enemy and entered the camp, and then Bob took the camp back (killing the psiloi), and then Alex eventually won the game elsewhere.

The level of sportsmanship and enjoyment by the players was very high.

DBA Huge Battle - Big Wheel Bash

We had a nice turnout for our Sunday Big Wheel Bash event. Players were split into two sides based on the enmity between Egypt and the Hittites.

Hittites and Allies:
Rob Torres - Hittite Empire
Alex Bostwick - Hittite Empire
Nate Morris - Hyksos
Ted Galacci - Later Philistine
Russell Loiselle - Minoan
David Kuijt - Early Libyan

Egypt and Allies:
Doug Mudd - New Kingdom Egypt
Tony Zallnick - New Kingdom Egypt
Bob Spencer - New Kingdom Egypt
Jonathan Bostwick - Early Egyptian
Rich Crosby - Neo Elamite
David Schlanger - Early Bedouin

12 players at once on a board that was something like 10 feet by 36". Tremendous fun! The battle ended up in a Pyrrhic Victory for the Egyptian (and ally) side, with both sides losing their left wings entirely.

I'll leave it to Chris to publish some of the special rules he used for this event. Generally speaking, it included march movement outside of 6" of the enemy, times bounds, and reserve commands.

-- Chris Brantley, Big Wheel Bash Manager

Final Comments:

Thanks to everyone who participated in the events at Fall In! 2003. It was a great time! Thanks also to the many WADBAGers who helped prepare for these events and run them. We had no significant problems with the rules or scoring. We used a third revision of the NASAMW DBA scoring system that was used at Cold Wars and Historicon in 2003. It incorporated some small changes to the system based on feedback we received earlier this year. I think the new revision worked out really well, and should be in place for next year's conventions.

Good sportsmanship was the rule of the weekend, and I don't recall any significant disagreements or problems.

Hope to see you all at Fall In next year!

Dave, a great report and a really great program by the WadBag. The DBA community owes you guys a big vote of thanks for all of your work.

It looks like there were 50 chairs filled, that is the number of players across all the games. Some like the Boswicks did all four events. There were 23 different players in all the events. There were many oldtimers, mostly east coasters, north and south. I did not see any I knew from midwest and west and deep south. There are a few names I did not recognize. Am I forgetful or are these new players
Robert Runnels
Nate Morris
Bob Spencer
Paul Stoklosa
Ted Galacci
David Mecone
Bryan Barnes
Robert Lockley
Tony Zallnick
Rich Crosby

Well the National Con program for 2003 is over. On to 2004. No rule changes expected and I hope no more Referee Rulings will be called for. A whole year with the same game.
Are we ready for Cold Wars??? Yes!!!

The Camp Combat is a classic story. Should go down in the mythos of the game. Good that the camp follower no longer counts as an element lost. So lose the camp and camp follower, go down 2. Take it back go back up 2. Lose the camp again, with a garrison - go down 3. It is terriffic play to spend so much time fighting around the camp, be -3 and still win in the field.

Robert Runnels is a member of this forum, out from the west coast. I just painted up a Mirliton Papal Italian army for him and delivered it at Fall In.

Paul Stoklosa has been down regularly for Fall In; he drives down from Ontario. I don't remember seeing him at Cold Wars or H'con this year, but I know he played at Fall In last year.

Bryan Barnes is a friend of DS's; we're trying to trap him. He just moved into the WADBAG area.

Tony Zalnick is primarily a DBM player, I believe.

Robert Lockley is an old convention friend and Napoleon's Battles vet. He was interested in ancients and we (Larry Chaban and I) twisted his arm. He used a borrowed army, but seemed to enjoy himself...maybe a new convert to the dark side???

Thank you to David K, Dave S, Chris B, and Jack S for running all the events. They were great fun! It was nice to see lots of new players. I hope they enjoyed the experience as much as I did.

Also, Rich Crosby is 'DBMinMass' on this forum and has contributed lots of good ideas. But as his moniker indicates, he is mostly a DBM player.
