I just painted up some QR miniatures from Poland, with these plus a number of left overs from other projects I'm hoping to put together an Estonian/Prussian army, a wend army, an early polish b army and if I still have enough mounted left over a Lithuania army (if not I'll scrounge around for the missing number of horsemen):

Paul, I officially hate your painting speed. It makes people like me cover in shame in a dark corner. Nice looking minis!

I'm a bit short on mounted fro the lithuanians so these will go back into the drawer for latter. but had enough figs for an all options wend army, a morph estonian/prussian and later poles. hopefully I can have the basing wrapped up sometime tomorrow then these will all be for sale:

So you've created three armies, out of painted models that you had lying around from other projects?

What's more impressive than the speed at which you pump out your forces, is the great standard of work in each of them.

Your techniques helped me get the 'hang' of painting 15mm models, but every time I see another army project posted, I learn something new. I bow down to the master! :up

Now I'll be over in the feotal position in the corner with Xavi.

One can never have enough Slavs so I am starting a fairly large Slav painting project. I have just started assembling the figs today, these consist of the old gladiator figs (now black hat), some old glory, Essex, QR miniatures, some splintered light miniatures, irregular,a few Khurasianian miniatures and of course a bunch of Essex. Here is the first photo:

Hello
They look really nice.
One thing I wondered about was how well the QR miniatures mixed with Old Glory (OG15s), and somewhat smaller figures such as
Essex and Gladiator figures (now Black Hat)?

The only one I cannot tell which company is, is the guy that hold the head ... any clue ?

Paul Potter

The QR figs mix perfectly well with essex, old glory and black hat.

the fig holding the head is from one of the QR sets.

Here is the majority of the figs for the new project waiting for priming and undercoating:

Terry, you'd be catatonic if you saw all the bare metal in my collection.

Terry37
12-31-2012, 06:57 PM
Oh trust me, I have more than plenty of bare metal, including moving boxes full going back to the 70s! But I never face that many to paint at one time usually, preferring to work on a few elements at a time.

DaveB
12-31-2012, 10:42 PM
I agree with Terry37... I can not look at more than 12 or so figure to paint.

My wife on the other hand is quite happy to take a whole DBA army out of the package... glue them to sticks and prime them. She may only paint half of them before moving on to something else. She hates to paint foot. It does not bother her to have primed unpainted figs around. Me.. drives me crazy. Oh well.....

I have around 10 DBM (not DBA, DBM) upainted full armies, so if anyone can paint that many minis at once Greece is a nice place for holiday :D

I too prefer no more than 4 or 5 elements at the same time

Paul,

You really are a painting dynamo - are you sure you are not part machine? However you have spurred me on to take some photos of my Early Russian/Slav army that has taken me over 6 months to complete!

I make things hard for myself by replacing all spears and most bows with steel pins or paper clips (Bw).

Keep it up as you really are an inspiration...

Steve:2up

PS - I also have enough unpainted lead for many an army - my imagination just runs way ahead of my ability to paint figures.

Two requests, I would like to see some of the bows you have replaced and I would really like to see your early russian/slavs.

Tonight I added some shields to some of the foot leader/elder types and some kite shields to some of the horsemen which I'll use for eastern and southern slavs:

Hi Paul.

Here are some pics of my Slav figures from the New Ancient & Modern (Donnigton) Dark Age range with some head conversions for extra variety. I have tried to model the early Rus period.

Paul Potter

No, the shields were added after priming because I did not decide to add them till later. So after the glue dried the shields were primed.

Thanks for the pictures Steppewarrior. I have never seen the new donnignton figs in person. these look quite nice and I like that they look rougher than the essex rus. the designs on the shields are excellent.

about photobucket, here is how I do it:
Go to library(or album),
double click on image so that it enlarges,
after you get the big picture go over to the right and click on image links,
hit the drop down arrow(if using the new photobucket),
then click IMG code, it will turn yellow, come over to fanaticus and click
ctrl v and the img code will appear. after you submit the post the photo will appear.
hope that helps.

Hi Paul,

Thanls for the help - the setting was set at thumbnail!

So starting again - top is the Rus Shieldwall followed by two shots of the Slav spearman. Then Slav Comd. I have replaced some heads with other A&E and Essex heads to add to the variety. The shields are glued on afterwords. I prep the figures arm to accept the two pack epoxy glue.

Hi Greg,

The shrine is home-made. The statues are from Monolith Designs 25mm Ancient Europe range:

http://www.monolithdesigns.co.uk/ancienteurope.htm

AEU25-56 Germanic/Slavic/Viking stone totems/cult stelae (x3)

They work fine for 15mm - you can trim the height to suit. The set includes a superb Thor statue which I will use as a terrain feature. It is worth looking through the various sections as they have a lot og good stuff!

Hello Paul
I have an unpainted Slav DBA (III 1) army which I hope to paint in future.

Nikos asked above:
> After the dark primer, what is that white thing you add on the minis?

I must admit that I am also curious about this.
Are you first undercoating in a dark colour and then painting some surfaces such as shields white in order to highlight colours?
I have read about this painting technique.
Is this what you are doing in order to get your painted figures looking so good?
Kind Regards

Sorry for my delay Nikos and Derek.
The white on the slave foot is the base coat. I used an off white to base coat them as I will leave almost all of the fabric white. This is covered in a brown wash then I go back and highlight the fabric with white leaving the browner off white in all the low spots. it then turns out like this (these are almost done, the metallics and some shield designs need to be added):

slav foot command:

archers:

The little big man studio Russian shield transfers have arrived but the kite shield transfers are to small for my shields and the round shields are to large for these so I have tried painting the intricate Russian shield designs by hand:

Hi Paul,

Sorry for the delay in answering - working away from home. They are Little Bigman Studio decals. The shield ones are 28mm Gripping beast re-sized to fit the 15mm shields. The banners are from the 15mm Dark Age options.

I do not have your skill doing shields so I go for the decals.

The QR miniatures are very tempting - they seem to mix well with SL and A&E figures.
