Hopla for the hoplites, face colours now awaiting blazons. This block of hoplites, the blue group, is the 3rd group of Tin Soldiery goodness for morphing Syracuse/Italiot/Siciliot/Whatever.

The painted figs all arrived safely today and are looking great! I'll be gluing them onto bases tonight (while watching Polanski's MacBeth for those of you who have been following that discussion). Will post pics in the near future after they're flocked.
I highly recommend Paul for commission work! Very reasonable rates and quick turnaround :2up
This has been a huge help in making sure I have plenty of armies to go around for the events I'm running at Havoc in a few weeks. After basing these, it's back to painting Carthos for me to finish up my end of the Havoc work.

Gauls are still in progress.
And here's the Italian army. It's built primarily as II/8b Campanians, but can be morphed into the other options. Figures are mostly Old Glory, the stand of bareheaded auxilia are Tin Soldier Apulians.

The basing is my usual technique of grabbing pinches of a few different shades of Woodland Scenics fine turf, plus some bits of medium turf/foliage for the psiloi who tend to hang out in bad going. And for this army, some pinches of some fine brown ballast too for rocks.
I use slightly different colour blends for each army. The Spanish army that I based at the same time as this got some pinches of dried tea leaves for their own colour/texture bits where they live instead of the ballast.
The touch up was just a quick evening's work with brush and pen.

The 4 chariots, campers, and pair of foot command figures Paul painted are getting added onto an EBay Gallic army purchase. This was originally a no-options Gallic army sans chariots: 2Cv, 9Wb, 1Ps (and cheap!). 4 Chariots gives it a British option, and just more charioty flavour for the Gauls.
Before I flock the chariots and Menhir camp, I needed to rearrange the basing on some of the infantry.
To make room for the foot command, 2 javelin figures got bumped onto a new 2nd stand of psiloi. That will also allow this army to be fielded as Scots Irish or an Early German 3Wb army.
The other stands were nicely based, but the warband were poorly arranged with shields and weapons hanging out over the edges. 3 of the stands, I was able to repose all the problems in situ. The rest needed a figure fully cut off the base and reglued.
Now that's done, I can flock the chariots, camp, new psiloi, and touch up the re-arranged bases all at once.

And now the Celts are ready to take the field. A full evenings work of paint touch up, especially on the EBay portion of the army. It's always a fun modelling challenge stirring up a cocktail to match somebody else's base flocking, as with the Chariots, Camp, and rearranged Command stand, and the resulting new stand of skirmishers so that they blended in with the rest of the army.

Redwilde, truly lovely work!!! I love the colors and especially the two shades on the shield of the cav guy at far right. May I ask what two colors you used for them?
Redwilde
03-18-2012, 10:52 AM
Terry, thanks -- I have no idea what red that is. These figs came block coloured and dipped. The shields where all monochromatic to start with, so I added details on top of them. My paints are Model Masters enamels. These jars are still sitting where I was painting, so I can figure out the rest of that shield: Pale Green FS34227, Dunkelblau RLM24, and Afrika Grunbaun '41. Outlining with a black .005 Micron Art pen. If I had to touch up that red, I'd grab my jar of British Crimson.
These shields were quick detailing jobs to brighten up the army. My really fancy Celtic shields will get posted soon when I'm ready to post pix of the 1st Carthaginian army :D
Redwilde, great work! :up

Action shots coming in the very near future!
I'm doing a huge push getting armies ready to host a pair of Punic War 2.2+ events at Havoc (http://havoc.battlegroupboston.org/) here in Massachusetts next weekend. An 8 player big battle game, and a mini-tournament. Players can bring their own theme armies isf they have them. Havoc usually draws a lot of new players into DBA games, so I'm preparing to provide all the armies if needed.
They'll see the field again on May 12 for a big battle day at the Boston Trained Bands club. After Havoc, I'll be able to provide 4 Punic big battle armies: a triple Syracuse; a double Carthaginian with a choice of Campanian or Spanish ally; and two double Polybians with a choice of Gallic, Numidian, or Spanish ally. Other club members have a bunch of Book II armies and should be able to pool together some more options.

Figures for Phase IV of the great hoplite morph are primed.
2 more stands of spears (#23-24) will allow a 4th Syracuse army, or a triple of a number of Greeks.
4 more stands of Psiloi will allow a triple Siciliot.
4 more stands of Light Horse will allow a triple all options Italiot.

My high quality Greeks are Xyston Kyreneans. Great figures, but such a pain -- cast without spears, but with closed instead of open hands, grr. :???
Had to drill every one out, and it's a hard metal. No way I was using those for the expanding hoplite morph

That another reason I really like the Tin Soldiers. I have just about finished some Xyston's but the drilling 1mm holes is driving me crazy. I also had problems with some of the pikemen as their hands were so tiny drilling just turned them into a mangle rather than a hand. Having said that I do like Xyston figs and their range is still expanding with some really interesting figs - I just try and buy the guys with swords :o)
Your Hoplites look great and I like the blue colour - it ties them all in as a cohesive unit. I have used LBM transfers (made for xystons) to do up the TS shields. They look pretty good too :o)
The army is coming on very nicely.

To add more options to the Punic Wars big battle armies on hand, I picked up one of Peter Wort's painted Gallic armies. This was short 2 warband stands, so I needed to paint those up. Plus I added a second psiloi stand for various Celto-German morphs.
For the warband I took the extra Old Glory Oscan Javelinmen left over from the morphing Italian army, deplumed their helmets and carved some of the javelins down into swords. The slingers are Old Glory Numidians with some northern hair colouring and jeggings painted on.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mQd0IrUYL7A/T6wOMpMHwgI/AAAAAAAAA5w/NVZe7WVQ2dU/s640/CisAlpF.JPG
It's always a fun challenge stirring up a recipe to match somebody else's basing materials. The static grass I have on hand is a different shade than Peter's, but matches well enough. I also sprinkled a few bits of my tealeaf ground scatter on all the bases to tie the lot together. Just did some minor touch up work on his fantastic painting -- drybrushed highlights onto the clothing and horses, and did detail outlining with a pen.

A quick paint job on a 10 more stands of Tin Soldiery goodness, and call it one more army in the morphin' pile.
Hoplite stands #23-24 for the Red Group. This now allows a triple army of many Hoplite variations, or a quad Syracuse. 2 of the figs have their spears cut down into swords for an optional General's stand. 1 Sp stand in each group gets monochrome helmet crests for rapid recognition as the General.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mzdKwVCL3dc/UD0TfqLrVpI/AAAAAAAABNA/OtxW7zPP29I/s640/DSCN2319.JPG
Psiloi stands #6-9, 3 for Blue Group and 1 for Red. This allows a triple Siciliot option:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XiW2vzdpA6Q/UD0TgtT_Z4I/AAAAAAAABNI/5NbtCuGBuvM/s640/DSCN2318.JPG
And Light Horse stands #6-9, 3 for Blue, 1 for Yellow. This allows a triple Italiot:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6g_ENYkLSXQ/UD0TgYkgeBI/AAAAAAAABNM/zz30F7HDffk/s640/DSCN2317.JPG
Lots more options now for the Punic Wars big battle games ^,^
This is the last of these for the forseeable future. If I ever place another Tin Soldier order (or just come across the figures somewhere), then I'll pick up figs for 2-5 more hoplitish Auxilia stands for more options within some of the army lists.
