It's Pyrrhus vs Rome (Polybian). I used the 3.0 army lists. The game went about 1 hour. Full report on my blog. http://johnswargames.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/581/

For the most part, I liked the game a lot. One thing i found curious is that the speeds were increased AND the armies could setup closer. In this case, 3 BW from the center was the norm. Not sure why Phil would do 2 changes. I would think that 4 Bw (approximatly what it is in 2.2) and faster speeds would be a big enough change.

Thanks for the report. How many turns did you end up with from start to finish?

This has been mentioned in the past. Phil has changed deployment in the latest draft from 2BW to 3BW from the centre which helps but it is still two solutions to one non problem.

3 bounds gets you into contact really but Rome really went for it on bound 4. 9 or 10 probably. It was fairly lengthy but I also did not use the strength of the Pyrrhic army nor did I use the flanking rules to the fullest since I did not understand until, half way through the game! I figure it would have ended 4-3 after 7 bounds if I really went for it.

This solution may not be so bad. I think 2.2 starts you way to far off. You can maneuver for 2-3 bounds each if you like before anything meaningful happens. With a good setup, IMHO, you start on the edge of contact, giving you perhaps 1 bound of maneuver each and then everyone gets stuck in.

Nice report, thanks. Interesting to see the effects of Bd and Pk making pursuits.

Great graphics, what did you use to do this?

I wonder about the Pyrrhic camp at the top away from the edge, or is that a BUA?

Hi Bob,

The top is a camp. Either the screen shot shifted the graphics or I misplaced the camp. It is supposed to be a walled camp just like the Roman camp below.

I made a VASSAL module to play a good many games. I did about 8 reviews last year of various game systems and posted them on my blog. Ended up playing 3-5 games each to get the feel of the game and then wrote my thoughts.

This module is designed to play DBA 2.2 but I did have a wheeling stick made so I just used that to measure distances. The graphics mostly come from Junior General (http://www.juniorgeneral.org). I drew a good many of them and modified others for my purposes. The camp should be recognizable to some. It came from some graphics that can be found on Fanaticus. I modified it to fit the board a bit better.

Next up, Marrius (or Caesar!) takes on the might of Gaul!

Looking forward to your next battle report between Marian Romans and Gauls or in dance terms, the quick step.

Jacar,

Nice report, thanks for sharing. I am planning on getting my Mithridatic army out soon and give it a whirl against some Marians.

Agree with you on the movement. Not sure if I like it or dislike it. Flanking moves are very easy now, and if PIPS are avaiable you can do some pretty spectacular shifting of the lines.
