View Full Version : Staines DBA 'Massive'

Hi
The DBA event calendar is often patchy and I've noticed that sadly again this year April appears to be devoid of DBA events and as far as I can tell the same applies to the period from 8th July to 28th September. That being said, having 3 in 5 weeks in Jun-Jul is a bit of a crush ...
I know August is a bad time as many players have to fit in a real holiday but I wonder how much interest there would be if we (Staines Wargamers) were to arrange a one-day DBA competition in late July ? The 28-29th is a possibly (the first weekend of the Olympics) or maybe the following weekend 4-5th August.
We have now organised three HoTT events at our venue just outside Staines and it would equally suit a DBA event. At this point I imagine it as an 'open' with 4 games in the day in a swiss-chess format and depending on numbers we could access either a small room (up to 10 players) or a much larger one (at least 24).
Based on the HoTT event it would be £5 entry with free tea and coffee supplied.
I yet have to discuss this with the other club members, but if it flies how many of you might be interested ?

Wrong side of London for me, but closer than Penarth. Definitely maybe, subject to the views of my C-in-C.

I sympathise.
Even from this side of London it's a 305 mile round trip for the day.

I'd try my best to attend, other clashes permitting - definitely interested.

Watch out for dates in August, last year they tried to have a meeting in Norwich in August.
Late April used to have a meeting at Bath, but that now seems a thing of the past.

Also definitely interested. Dates seem OK at this point. Fairly easy to get to for me... I've only just spotted this so I wonder if other players local to me, who have not posted, have also missed it?

I was a bit surprised as well Colin, I might do a flyer to send/give out.
It's possible that the furore over V3 is driving people away from reading the forum ...
It's still quite a way off, and the venue isn't booked, but we I reckon we need 10-12 yes's to make it viable because 10-12 yes's now means 8-10 on the day.

A word of warning if the venue is small. Experience from Alvechurch suggests that 10-12 now means 20 on the day.

I collected two flyers yesterday for upcoming DBA competitions (at Penarth) - seems to be a useful standard procedure now. It is difficult for people to commit a long time ahead, but a few conversations with players at your next meeting should give you a good idea of interest and it's interesting what Scott says. Also, several local players I know rarely post on Fanaticus, or are not members. Another issue might be around parking etc - It may sound silly, but people who do not know the area might wonder if they can get easy access, park their car, buy something to eat. Staines sounds very 'urban'... might be a little daunting to country folk. :D

Anyone else care to express an interest ?

When I finalised Alton I put a flyer in the Yahoo DBA group files, and also e.mailed to all and sundry to see what the interest level is like. I'd suggest something similar (and a prompt on here to give us the chance to look in the Yahoo group files - the DBA group message board is so busy with the current mud-slinging contest that it's hard to spot a relevant post :eek).

Beware school hols and so forth - they seem to force some players to cry off, Norwich was a case in point.

I would be interested, but more so if it were more than four games, and more so if it were on a Sunday.
