View Full Version : A View from the Bridge.

Lately I have decided coming the Fanaticus forums, especially the DBA 3.0 topics is like standing on a bridge over a small polluted river.

People see **** in the river. They pick it up. They sniff it. They squeeze it. They taste it. They get it all over themselves.

Then they complain about the **** in the river.

I suggest one just leave the **** alone. Stop poking and prodding at it. Pass it by. Let it float on downstream. Eventually it will disappear. And no one will have it on their hands.

Just a suggestion.

Jim

Unfortunately the river will soon have s**t and good clean water, but if you want one or the other, then determining when to jump will be the problem.

I am seriously thinking about installing a bath instead, and not relying on the river. 3mm ACW.

Hello Jim

Have you tried collecting pins?

Just a suggestion.

Yes, but the collector of pins got rid of them.

I tend to agree with Jim.

Here is my contra-drama view:

1) Phil is a talented person and has created valuable rules and source materials for us all in the past. Heck I still have my copy of the Purple Primer and WRG 4th Edition!

2) Phil is working on a new project. That project is not finished. We don't know when or even if it will be finished and published.

3) Between today and whenever Phil's new project comes out, I plan to play lots of DBA and HOTT. I will be using the published rules as the standard of play. Since 2.2 is published (and HOTT 2.0), I will plan to play that.

4) There are some published rules that have been experientially shown to be broken. There is some consensus on how to fix problems and these fixes are usually applied in convention events. They are well known. I will incorporate these fixes into the games I play at home and at friend's houses so that I am ready for convention play.

5) Between today and the hypothetical release of a new product, I don't really need to worry about what happens. This is largely because I don't actually HAVE TO buy or play it. I can make that choice myself based on its merits when the time comes. Until then, DBA 2.2 plus the common convention fixes continues to work fine for me. For all I know right now, I may be playing DBA 2.2+ for the rest of my life. Or I could be an avid fan of 3.0. Only time will tell.

6) All past experience of myself and others leads me to beleive that Phil's primary talent is creating army lists, not rules. In neither case, does he seem open to the ideas of others unless he specifically seeks counsel (and possibly not even then)

I am basically fine as I am and don't really need to drink the water going by...

I am far too passionate and opinionated to simply watch the detritus go by. While v2.2 has its issues, they are all easy fixes with house rules and a consensus on what those fixes should be. The anticipation of 3.0 was that we would get "official" fixes to v2.2 and maybe some surprises. Well, we got the surprises. For some, like me, the disappointment has to be vocal. I fume. I vent. I feel better. No blood pressure issues. I play 2.2 with my friends and all is good in the world. :D

Yes, but I live in a house next to that river. Me and my neighbors have spent a lot of time and money gathered around that river and enjoying its waters.

If that river is going to go putrid and drive away all my neighbors, then maybe I need to start looking for a new neighborhood. If the river is going to make my investment worthless, perhaps I need to sell while I still can.

Perhaps it is better to move today rather than wait for the spring floods.

Don't move too far. There are plenty of neighborhoods that will be playing v2.2. ;)

I spent several years working in the field of waste water treatment. :) The simplest and oldest mechanism, and what's still the primary method is similar to what Jim's suggesting--just pour the water into a big pool and let the **** settle out.

But after that, you still need to filter it several times and treat it with chemicals and UV to kill off the tiny bugs that won't settle out.

All of which seems like an awful lot of work. Me, I think I'll stick to the already bottled water. :D

To John M's point about investment -- while I am not a frequent poster here -- I have been playing DBA since the 90s. I still have many 1.1 armies that were obsoleted by the 2.0 lists. I have dozens of armies and substantial investment in DBA (and HOTT.) Nonetheless, I'm just gonna keep playing and enjoying my friends and my armies and the occasional win.

I recognize that some will find it of positive, therapeutic value to vent. Fanaticus is probably a constructive place for that to occur. I would just like to encourage those who don't find that communication helpful, useful, or therapeutic for themselves to do two simple things:

1) Play more games
2) Paint more lead

Ok maybe one more...
3) Play in the HOTT matched pairs at ColdWars :)

I'll take my water in frozen form and add a little vodka. Need that drink after reading 3.0.

Oh yeah. Its my turn to throw the party. Right T.V.?! :D

Absolutely. I have some pappadums, a box of oranges and 50 copies of the rules that we can set on fire when they displease us. No where is the booze?

All of us will be doing it if we change from 2.2 to 3, when we do not want to.
