I'd decided to use VVV Early Imperial transfers for my Marian shields, but wasn't very happy with the fist attempt. Then I spotted the 3rd and 4th photos here:

That person had used the same decals, but better. I trimmed off some of the decal and managed to get the wings closer to the boss. It looks much better.

Any pictures of you attempts?

I have used VVV decals from time to time, and have been pleased with the results. Some of my Marian's have them, the others Little Big Men transfers. The VVV are traditional decals, and relatively easy to use. The LBM require a bit more work.

Not yet; still finishing the figures; may slow down a bit now the pike army is complete, but they're not far away.

Yes, I've got a few LBM decals, but not used them as much; they seemed a lot fiddlier, though the results were great. VVV are very forgiving, and easy to chop and change with.

Did you use Decal solvent? I found that worked nicely for the VVV I used on my hoplites.

Yes, I use Micro Sol; I paint it on the shield and let it dry (wet it turns the paint to putty and repositioning the decal is fraught!); I then put it on the decal once positioned.

Very interesting. I use Micro Sol also, but paint it on after I position the decal. Have had no problems yet with paint softening. What kind of paint are you using?

I've not had a problem putting the stuff on top of the decal, but wet underneath it softens the paint and you can strip it while positioning. Not sure if it does much underneath after it dries, but it's my routine now.

Here they are halfway; they've not had any wash yet or painting to fill the gaps:
