I want to get some input on what events to run at Cold Wars

I am brain stroming here. Looking for some ideas. We can plan for Cold Wars until maybe December then NASMW wants to know the schedule. So noting is set in stone, even in wet clay yet. If you are planning to come to Cold Wars give me some answers to permit me to ask more questions, I like this POLL thing.
Keep in mind that we will have the Midnight Madness at about 10PM on Friday and the Sunday Theme events on Sunday at 9am. I am looking for ideas for the rest of the time slots.
Thanks

Most of your poll questions are about Big Battle Doubles, Bob. I'd be interested in a more extensive poll examining the interest in 25mm -- whether it should be HOTT, or a 25mm Open, or both, or what, and when it should be, and whether the 25mm games should be conflicting with the 15mm games. There isn't a lot of spare time in the schedule -- WADBAG has often run a special tournament or event, and it looks like the best time to run such a thing with the preliminary schedule you've published is opposite the 25mm Open, which has previously been protected.
I was encouraged to see that there were still 14 teams playing for the Big Battle Doubles title at Historicon, even with your "Book III/IV" tournament running opposite it. I think that goes to show how much interest and support there is for the Big Battle Doubles format. For social gaming, there really isn't anything like it. True, not all teams are willing to wear Elephant Noses when playing Elephant Armies, but I thought the banter and good fellowship was remarkable anyway smile.gif

My son Matt and I would be sorry to see the 25mm Open replaced. We both enjoy playing in it and I enjoyed umpiring it at Historicon and would be happy to continue to do so. Neither of us has any real interest in HOTT (a failing, I know) so you have two votes to leave the 25s the way they are.

We should keep traditions. The Midnight madness is always run on Friday evening. The 25mm open has been on Saturday evening. The themes plays on Sunday morning. To run the doubles, first determine how many groups are interested. If there is enough interest, schedule it. For those without partners, run the HOTT. Still plenty of time to schedule other events. Everybody happy? smile.gif

Everybody happy? smile.gif The only problem is protectionism. There is NO time to run any other events if certain events are protected. Now some events don't need protection -- the Themes, for example. Nobody else really wants to run things on Sunday, and if they did want to, the Themes wouldn't be affected at all. Midnight Madness also doesn't need protection -- it starts at 10pm, after regular DBA events usually stop. But Big Battle runs for a long time -- protecting it isn't fair to the people who (through error in judgement) don't want to play in the premier DBA experience of their lives, and want to play some other DBA ;) . And the 25mm tournament runs Saturday evening -- really prime time, gaming-wise. Protecting it is unfair to the people who want to play 15mm. And also makes it very difficult for groups (like WADBAG) who want to sponsor their own special tournament or set of games.
I must have missed something. I don't remember saying anything about "protecting" an event. Never entered my mind. Multiple DBA events should be run ! Why souldn't people have a choice. Might even attract more to the hobby. smile.gif I know that some events fill up quickly at tournaments. Offering a variety just keeps them coming! smile.gif

Bob's Duplicates, for example, are so popular that they sometimes fill up at Historicon by noon on Thursday, and there are usually a dozen alternates in case someone doesn't show.

My first brainstoming attempt (polls plus comments from various places) leads me to the followng _tentative_ conclusions
Do the 15mm Big Battle Doubles on Saturday Morning/Afternoon
Do the 25mm Open on Saturday night
allow alternative games at each time for those who do not like this style. This worked at Historicon. There were 10 people who did not like BB so played a singles event. There were a number of people who did not like 25mm so played David's skirmish game.
Keep Friday morning ( 9-1) , afternoon(1-5), and early evening (5-10) open for new events. One of those could be a HOTT tourney, now I'm thinking evening. So two slots open for sure.
Anyone remember when we did the HOTT tournment at Cold Wars 04?
We had a good turnout for the Beginners Event at Cold Wars which I think was Saturday afternoon. Should we repeat.
There are 5 people who would play in a pre-con big game, I am thinking this would be a 5-6 army per side event, with 5 players per side. A big Alexander successor game with lots of Elephants - Raphia or Magnesia. So I need 5 more players.
Saturday night I will be doing a big game with my local club, Colonial Era, GASLIGHT
If I remember it was Saturday Afternoon between events.

Big Battle Doubles was Friday afternoon at Cold Wars this past year. It has been both Friday and Saturday daytime in the past.
