Omnia Pro Pecunia Facta Sunt!
(15th c. latin motto -- all things are done for money)
It is Northern Italy, 1415 AD. The wealthiest city states in Europe, nay, the World. And lots of money means lots of very, very capable mercenaries!
Powers are:
Venice (open)
Venetian Dalmatia (open)
Verona (open)
Aquileia (open)
Bergamo (open)
Milan (open: two players)
Savoy (open)
Genoa (open)
Mantua (open)
Ferrara (open)
Modena (open)
Bologna (open)
Florence (open)
Ancona (open)
Spoleta (open)
Sienna (open)
Kingdom of the Two Sicilies / Naples (open)
Papacy (open)
Swiss Confederation (open)
Prince-Bishop of Trent (open)
Duchy of Styria (open)
Kingdom of Hungary (open)
The Swiss Confed will use an alternate list that better covers the army of the Swiss in that period, when they were making the transition from Halberds to Pikes: 1x 4Pk or 3/4Bd (Gen), 1x 2LH or 2Ps, 3x 4Pk, 5x 3Bd or 5x 4Bd, 2x 2Ps.
Trent and Styria use the Medieval German list, but no Pike option.
Kingdom of Hungary will only be in play if we have sufficient enrollment, as it was a fringe player.
Pavisier rules for 8Bw and Raiders rules for 3Bd will be used; both have appeared in several previous Campaign Themes.
All Condotta Knights may dismount. All dismounting is at deployment ONLY.
Map image coming.

Jason, it won't matter...my Venetian pavises are spoils of war and not yet repainted.

Hey there,
You did see that the Swiss are not using the standard "Later Swiss" army list, right?

I think Mike was actually :eek making a pun. :D
I will take Trent, or Hungary if that becomes available. Simply because I already have a double condotta army and have played them a LOT and would like to do something new.
I'll be happy to bring my Italians though, in case anyone would like to play but doesn't have an army. Of course, since this event is all about condotta, I will not loan them out, but I will be happy to RENT them. :D
Jan
Edited to add: I should warn prospective *ahem* customers that I do not have dismounting figures for the knights. No Italian grandee would spend the money for a blood charger and then get off it and leave it behind!

Sorry to Jeff and Jason who both want Florence; only one person can be Florence. So one of you must be disappointed.
Actually, even he must be disappointed, as I've checked my own Condotta army, and my commander is painted with the heraldry of Nicollo da Tolentino who was the major Condotta leader for Florence in this period, and all my Pavises are painted for Florence.

Please sign me up for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
(Though, technically speaking, it should just be the Kingdom of Sicily in 1415. It wasn't until 1442 that this Kingdom of Sicily (centered on Naples) was united with the other Kingdom of Sicily (the one actually on the island of Sicily) to form the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. With Wikipedia even I can be an expert!)

The Piccolomini family was very powerful in Siena...
Or you could be a Condottieri who moved around, like Carlo Malatesta, who worked for Venice, Florence, Ladislaus of Naples, and others in the decade before and after 1415...

Sforza didn't get in until 1450; he was 14 years old at the time of this campaign. This is you: Filippo Maria Visconti; your daughter marries Francesco Sforza some time later.

According to Wikipedia, F-M Visconti was cruel, paranoid and extremely sensitive about his personal ugliness! Excellent!

Please make my ruler James II, Count of La Marche. In 1415 Ladislaus was no longer amongst the living. Which disqualifies him from rule, even in the permissive morals of 15th century Italy. James Of La Marche had recently married Joan II, sister of Ladislaus, and promptly locked her up in her apartments so that he could take sole rule of the kingdom. Which struck me as perfectly in line with the prevailing moral climate.

That's correct. I thought about making more specific lists, based upon boiling down the DBMM lists a bit, but after doing a lot of work on it, found that differences weren't that significant when boiled down to 12 elements. So each condotta army can be any legal v2.2 army Condotta list, just as you might expect.

Pavisiers are +2/+4 shooting
Pavisiers act like Spear in the combat results charts in all respects
Pavisiers move like other heavy foot (2")
Pavisiers are -2 in BGo.
Psiloi doubled by Pavisiers are killed
I think that's everything.
The link that Jan posted gives all the arguments for their use (historical and playbalance-wise). But I'm not trying to recreate that discussion -- anyone interested can find various threads from a year or two ago on that issue, and should read those before bringing it up.
This is a special rule for the Campaign Theme, as we often do for our Campaign Themes, to give them a bit more historical flavor.

LH doubled by Pavisiers are killed still apply?
Hmm. Yes, should do. The main Combat Technique of Pavisiers when blasting the hell out of LH is the same sort of massed missile fire as Bow, so certainly should do.
Basically, Pavisiers are like Bow with a hard candy shell. The hard candy shell gives them a bit more resilience in hand-to-hand against foot, but more brittle against Wb, and less effective in BGo (since all the historical examples we examined when coming up with this concept used 8Bw as completely GGo troops) where the hard candy shell would find it difficult to maintain formation. Against mounted troops returning fire the hard candy shell gives them more resilience and protection (i.e., no QK by Cv).

We have had several signed up players contact us wishing that this campaign theme be run using the 2.2+ Beta rules.
And it makes sense. We are already using several rules from 2.2+ (Raiders, Pavisiers, 30" boards, dismounting in deployment only), so are already half way there!
We would only make this change if we have universal support amongst the pre-registered players. I am hoping that the few players that have not yet had exposure to 2.2+ will be willing to give it a try. See: http://www.wadbag.com/V2.2+/index.html

Hi Roland - we never know if all pre-reg players will actually show... and we can always try to expand if needed. The only thing we want to avoid is an odd number of players.
We have 1 pre-reg slot left which I will give to you... we can put John on the wait-list for now.

There were, Ron, but that doesn't help here -- we can't have an odd number of players. Yes, our plan is to bring back the second Milan spot and add another Florence or Hungary spot -- but there is no solution for odd numbers.

Something new for this campaign:
Condotierre Mortality Adjustment Table (CMAT):
General's Element destroyed: roll 1d6 AFTER the battle is over
1-2: hid, escaped, fought his way free of the destruction of his
personal guard, or maybe had been letting someone else use his armor
that afternoon -- no ill effects.
3-4: Captured. Ransomed after the battle. If the captured General
won the battle attacking (in spite of getting captured) he does NOT
gain the defeated side as a vassal (he just gets to ransom himself).
If the captured General was defeated (whether attacking or defending)
he becomes a vassal of the side that captured him.
5-6: Killed. Replaced for the rest of the campaign by his senior
Lieutenant. Player loses all direct vassals immediately; they all
become independent. If the dead General won his final battle
attacking, his Lieutenant still gains the defeated side as a vassal.
If the dead General lost his final battle defending, his Lieutenant
still becomes a vassal.
Enjoy!

At this point the only one we are certain CMAT doesn't apply to is the Swiss, whose "general" element represents a bickering group of shop stewards and is way too decentralized to really be permanently eliminated or relevantly captured.

1415:
King Sigismund of Hungary begins its bid for Empire by attacking Styria, forcing its ruler Archduke Ernest the Iron to subject himself to vassalage.
Louis of Teck, Patriarch of Aquileia, seizes upon a pretext of inappropriate customs dues on his goods entering Venice to attack Venice; in a quick campaign the forces of the Doge are defeated and Tommaso Mocenigo submits to Aquileian control.
Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan, attacks and defeats Pippo Franco, the Condottieri mustering the forces of Spoleto. Spoleto submits to Milanese rule. The Duke of Milan takes his armies home, secure in the knowledge that Spoleto will remain his ally for many years to come, not knowing that in fact Spoleto will wear the coats of five different overlords in four years (a new record! Way to go Alex!)
Genoa sends its fleets and armies to invade Naples, using a rumor that the Regent of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (James II, Count of La Marche and husband of the Queen of the Two Sicilies) has imprisoned his Queen and illegally taken rulership of the country from her as an excuse. James II is defeated, but he submits to Genoese rulership. The Genoese find that the Queen is, in fact, locked in a tower to prevent her from interfering with James' rulership, but the Genoese Emissary decides that since James is now a loyal vassal of Genoa, the situation is fine as it is, and the Queen stays locked in the tower. Genoa gains naval control of the Gulf of the Lion.

The Patriarch of Aquileia acts quickly to conquer neighboring Trent, and directs his vassal Venice to subdue the pretensions of the King of Hungary, using Sigismund's recent invasion of Styria as an excuse. Both battles are successful, leading to a New Power in the North.
Bologna conquers adjacent Modena.
Sienna finds the Milanese control of Spoleto unacceptable, and invades them. In a terrible battle both Condottieri leaders are killed, but Sienna wins the day, and the surviving chief Lieutenant of Sienna's Condottieri accepts the surrender of the surviving chief Lieutenant of Spoleto's Condottieri, Pippo Pippo (Alex Bostwick). Will this rulership last? Not even until the next round, as it turns out.
Bergamo conquers Mantua, starting claims of the Great Bostwick Collective.
James of La Marche, leading the forces of Naples, invades and conquers Venetian Dalmatia.

No sooner do the forces of Sienna leave Spoleto when Pippo Pippo betrays his new overlord and sends emissaries asking Bergamo, aka Papa Bostwick, for protection and to join the Bostwick Collective. As shown on the map.
(Spencer forgot that the 21 tile was the Suckup Tile, and gave it to Alex, who immediately used it to switch allegiance to another Ruler -- Bergamo)

The Patriarch of Aquileia does not look kindly upon Naples interfering in his region of influence, and invades and conquers Venetian Dalmatia, but not in time to prevent Naples from attacking and conquering his indirect vassal Hungary. Verona also gets in on the "reduce the power of Aquileia" ride, attacking and subduing Styria.
Milan, pining after its lost empire, gets tired of the constant poking of mercenary forces from Switzerland, and invades and conquers the Swiss Confederation.
Genoa conquers Savoy.
Florence conquers Pippo Pippo of Spoleto. Will this stick? It never has before.
The Bostwick Collective evaporates as Modena conquers Mantua and Florence conquers Spoleto. Ancona conquers Bologna, giving them (brief) control over a micro-empire as large and powerful as any on the map in 1417.

Pictures come up, they did not.
DS needs to copy them to his picasa so they can be downloaded; Fanaticus doesn't seem to support direct uploading of images, just linking to existing ones.

Mantua conquered Venice, taking them away from the Aquileian sphere of influence, but only briefly, as Bologna fell to the armies of Venetian Dalmatia, taking them back within it. But All was not wonderful for Aquileia, as they were crushed in battle by Verona, who now became true masters of the Northeast and also gained by success from their Styrian vassals, who conquered Ferrara.
Ancona's brief empire was split off through the defeat of their Bolognese vassals, and they were subjected by Naples to become part of the Genoese sphere.
Genoa also gained through their Savoyard vassal's defeat of Florence, which put Pippo Pippo of Spoleta under his fifth different ultimate overlord in a game of four strategic turns, which is a record difficult to beat.
As the game was nearing midnight and Verona's empire was nearly half the map (9 of 22 states owed Verona fealty) we stopped it there, leading to a three way tie between Verona (Alan Ferrency), Aquileia (Mark Pozniak, Ruler of the North until his last-round defeat) and Genoa (Diceman Rick Baier), who controlled 7 of the 22 states himself.
Two other small overlords existed in Sienna and Milan.
And only one city-state was lonely and independent -- Bergamo, once Ruler of the Bostwick Collective.
