Just a quick idea for an ECW campaign depicting the opening stages of the conflict with the King attempting to advance on London and Essex attempting to block him.

The campaign is made up of two battles and one cavalry skirmish.

The first engagment is the Cavalry skirmish at Powick Bridge. The terrain must include a river and road with a bridge crossing. The actual engagment was fought in the lanes around the village.

Each side fields 4 x Cavalry elements, 1 x Dragoon element, 1 x Musketeer element and General figure. First side to loose 2 elements has lost the engagment.

Attempt to recruit lost elements. Roll of dice for each lost element 4,5,6 element recruited. The winning side can re roll one failure.

Second Battle is Edgehill. Terrain must include one steep hill. The Royalists are commanded by the king and Parliament by Essex.

Armies are fielded as normal less any lost elements not recruited after Powick Bridge.

Battle is fought as normal DBA.

Lost elements are replaced as described above.

The third engagment is Turnham Green just out side London. In real life apart from a small exchange of cannon fire no battle was actually fought. The two armies faced each other and eventually the King turned his army away and marched for Oxford. Terrain is set up as per DBA rules.

Battle is fought as normal however only the kings army has to fight less any elements not replaced after Edgehill. Parliament has a full army as the force at Turnham Green was reinforced by apprentices etc from the City of London.

Victory.

If the King is Lost the Royalists lose the campaign. The loss of Essex does not force Parliament to lose. He would have been replaced. probably by Manchester.

Keep a total of the number of elements lost by each side in each engament.

Award 5pts for each element eliminated in battle. 10 points if Essex is lost and also any subsequent commander who is lost. Award 15 points for an engament that is won.

Total up the score and the side with the most points wins the campaign.

This looks really interesting, thanks Cromwell.:up

As soon as I finish my current painting task I'm onto early Civil War Royalist and Parliamentarian armies for DBA-RRR (the figures are sitting primed and ready to go on the painting table).

I really like the idea of the smaller skirmishes being brought into the campaign.

Looks like a pretty hard slog for the Royalists to win - it would be interesting to look further at Turnham Green in terms of the quality of the replacements for the Parliamentarians.

Maybe there are some rule variants that could be brought into it to reflect the untrained nature of the reinforcements from London?

Maybe classing them as irregular troops as per this variant (http://www.fanaticus.org/DBA/variants/regularirregular.html).

Have not thought this through - just an idea off the top of my head. :silly

I will definitely give your mini campaign a go - just got to get painting!

Cheers

Yes I think it is going to be hard for the King to win but there again it was for real.

I agree the quality of the Parliament army at Turnham Green is questionable however it certainly contained the London Trained Bands who although short on combat experience were very well drilled. I like the idea of Irregular Troops but I don't think it can be applied to the whole army. Perhaps making Parliament carry any loses over from Edgehill would balance things more. Another idea would be to replace 2 random elements with horde elements torepresent the apprentices.
