Hi All,

I am currently working on an Essex DBA Feudal English army IV/23, and would like some info on my Gen base. The miniatures I have been sent are a Knight, a King and his squire with banner (MID67, 67a and 10). I intend to paint the King as Edward I (who else) as portayed in MAA 151 - The Scottish and Welsh wars 1250-1400. What I would like to know is what will the other two characters on the base look like/represent. I presume that the banner is the King's if so, what did this look like? I am also presuming that the knight with the King will be family, if so who and what was his heraldry?

I would also like to apologise for my ignorance on this matter, my only excuse being that I am knew to this era of wargaming and royalty was never my strong point.

Michael,
I would assume the banner would be of the Plantagent arms:
red field, three lions passant gardant (leopards) yellow. These originated under Henry III, King of England 1216-72. These arms are still present (although quartered) in Engalnd's coat of arms.
An option to this could be St George:
white field, red cross.
As for who was the standard bearer, it depends on which battle you want to portray. Usually the standard was entrusted to a knight with great strength and valor. It was an honor to carry it and it was also a heavy responsibilty since it was the king's signal device. For Scottish Wars of Independence, I might be able to find a couple of names (hopefully with heraldry) for some standard bearers.
The other knight could be another noble or a soldier from Edward's retinue. If you decide to make him part of his retinue, then use Edward's livery and badge (these I will have to look up as well if they aren't the same as his COA). I will try to find some amorial sites that could be of some use for heraldry for the other mounted (Caeverlock Roll might be useful).

Thanks Darren,

I have just found some evidence that suggests that until 25 January 1340 the royal banner was - gules, 3 lions passant guardant i pale Or. So I guess thats what I will be doing. I was going to do the George cross as you suggested, but I'm not sure when this was introduced. Thanks for the help.

Three lions passant Or, on a field Gules.

That is three lions yellow/gold, with three paws down, one forward, on a red field. Arrange them vertically over each other. IE-One in the upper third, one in the middle, one in the lower third of the flag, shield, livery, etc...
If you need a pic, feel free to ask. Or get a copy of Osprey's Bannockburn, which has Edward II in the same markings, in several paintings etc.
Also, Edward I had been seen in signet markings wearing a white tunic (Osprey-Scottish and Welsh Wars).

Cheers,
Bryan
