As a big fan of the VVV shield transfers, I almost feel disloyal for asking, but what do folks think of the press-on shield transfers approach by Little Big Man Studios?

And are those for 15mm? I got the impression that they were for larger scales...

I am about to order some to try out. They certainly sound good. I shall let you know when I get them.

The Little Big Man Studios says their transfers will be designed for 25/28mm figures, but can be scaled for any size miniatures. How much of the design detail is lost in scaling the image from 25mm to 15mm isn't clear. If there is much demand for scaling, than I expect LBMS will bite the bullet and add a separate 15mm range. And if press-ons prove popular, I wouldn't be surprised to see other companies jump on the bandwagon with their own offerings in various scales.

For those of you who haven't followed the discussion at TMP, the LBMS announcement also provoked a debate about whether figures using shield enhancements (e.g. waterslide or press-on transfers) should be eligible for Best Painted competitions.

I am confused about the mechanism for these LBMS shield designs. The terms press on and rub off are being use. Are these just adhesive backed, you peel them off and stick them on? Or are they like the old press-type letters which you actually rubbed on one side and the image came off on the other?

The former seems too thick to add to shields and the latter too difficult to get on. Water slide decals seem to give a good result, both thin and easy to use. I have tried to cut out designs from paper and these tend to be thick. Some great Greek designs are here

In either event and if decals, then these should not be allowed in painting contests where the submitter is supposed to be the painter. Having someone else "paint" your shields or flags is not different from having someone paint your figs.

I'm sticking with water-slide transfers myself. As someone on TMP pointed out, you can push and pull a transfer around until it is in exactly the right place. If you position a rub-on transfer badly, its stuck, and you will have to paint over it and use another.

I MIGHT consider if the quality was better (especially if they had a greater number/depth of colors).

I also think they would be very fiddly to apply to 15mm figures.
