Looking at the army list revisions, it appears this is a moot question, but is there any chance of getting more flexibility on which elements are designated the general?

It is bothersome to have armies with 2Cv elements that historically deployed with infantry in the center and cav on the wings when one of the Cv is designated as a general.

In such cases, it makes more sense to let an infantry element be classed as general.

The argument against this is that the historical general was mounted during the battle, but in the case of Polybian Romans, his escort would have been much smaller than a full DBA element.

Why not designate - by rule or by list - what kinds of elements can have a general and not then pre-designate for the players?

As I said, I assume this ship has sailed, but I'm late to the dock and wanted to at least make an attempt to bring it up - and see if anyone has raised it with Sue/Phil already.

You might want to paint a single figure for the General and attach him to any element you wish. You could move him from element to element as you wished.

i dont agree with this, that would go back to the DBA 1x versions were everyone use whatever gen wiches depent on the army he faced. even if it gives limited options of troop types , say Cv or Bd for example, it would be in most cases unhistorical if in some armies the gen was always in particular element type, not mention that as in troops type options some armies would have more options for the general from others. i think all those thoughts are just becouse players want to inhance the capabilities of their army by reducing the command radius from the flanks to the center and nothing more

John, I think your point about some general elements being of the wrong category is well taken. I am not sure about picking the element you want, but certainly a more considered selection historical alignment of the type of general element would be welcome.

There was some discussion on this back here: http://fanaticus.org/discussion/showthread.php?t=10358l

All that's needed is an indication of which element types are eligible to be nominated as the general. This can easily be noted separately from full troops types list. This would be a welcome way of not distorting the proportion of available troops based on choice of general as is done currently.
