Pike Rear Support

Suggested By Lance Gamble

Historically, pike fought in blocks of varying depths, from 4-6 ranks deep to 10-12 ranks or more.  Macedonian taxis deployed in blocks as deep as 16 ranks.  DBA partially replicates this, by allowing an element of Pike to provide a +3 support bonus against most foot and Knights if "lined up directly behind and facing the same direction" as another friendly Pike element.  So that means you can effectively double the depth of your Pike phalanx to strengthen it.  But as a general, what if you wanted more depth to stiffen the ranks, without sacrificing 50% of your frontage.  This variant rule, suggested by Lance Gamble, gives you that flexibility.

In the variant, Pike receive a +1 bonus if supported by a single friendly element of Pike lined up in contact directly behind them or directly behind a friendly element of the same type in side edge and front corner-to-front corner contact with them.  This is analogous to the way in which a Psiloi element can provide a rear support bonus to up to three elements of Spears, Blades or Auxilia.

Note, that in this variant, the supporting Pike element only provides a +1 bonus (not a +3 rear support bonus) to the Pike element directly to its front.  The reflects the fact that the manpower of the supporting Pike element has been spread along the full line of Pike.

Like the Psiloi rule, note also that the supporting element of Pike is only killed if the Pike element it is directly behind and supporting is killed.

Example:

Pike D provides +1 rear support to Pike A, B & C.  If Pike B is destroyed while using the +1 rear support from Pike D, then Pike D is also destroyed.  If Pike A or C is destroyed with rear support from Pike D, Pike D is uneffected.   At no point can Pike D provide more than +1 to any supported element.
