Reviews of Venexia Miniatures

James Hughes on Venexia Ottoman Turks

I was at the DBA Eurocup in Milan (Nov. 2002), and they gave away packets of Corvus Belli and Venexia figures to all the participants. The Venexia figures were from the brand new Ottoman Turk line that is coming out, so I though I would review them.

OT2 Heavy Cavalry with barded horses (1400-1550): These are very nicely detailed figures, with minimal flash. There are two different horse poses in the pack, one wearing cataphract-style scale armor, and the other cloth barding. There are 4 different rider variants, each with a different hat or helmet and slightly different armor. All are in the same pose---- but they can actually produce a great deal more variety, because their weapon arms are cast seperately. My packet included 4 different arm variants: 2 spears (one couched, the other held more loosely) a scimitar, and a mace. The shoulders of the riders form a socket that the weapon arms fit nicely into, so that you can vary the position and angle of the arm. Finally, seperate shields were also included, and there were 3 different variants of these, all round buckler types, but of varying concavity and surface detail.

I have one problem with these figures, and that is that they are a bit large. The riders are comparable to some Essex figs I have on hand, tolerably close to Old Glory, but are too big compared to Gladiator. The horses are too big compared to all three other companies' horses. I didn't have enough figures here to make a very broad comparison, but I suspect these won't mix well with many other manufacturers. The horses are about 15 or 16mm at the shoulder.

All in all, these are very fine figures, I would rate them an A-, not getting a + because of the size issue. Still, when I do an Ottoman army, I will certainly use Venexia. These are well cast, well detailed, and have a great deal of variety.
