DBA 2.0 Errata

Guides  > Resources  > Fanaticus

The following is a collection of suggested corrections to typographical and similar errors in DBA 2.0. They are "unofficial" in that they have not been endorsed by the author Phil Barker. They are divided into clear errata (typos and obvious errors in DBM-DBA translation) and proposed errata (based on new historical information or interpretations of the DBM army lists), as well as proposed changes. If you spot an errata, drop a note to Chris Brantley with the details.

Page 5 (Basing Your Figures and Models): The DMB List Code corresponding to the DBA list code 6Bd is identified as "Bd (X)", but should be "Bd (X) DB", to indicate a double-based DBM element type.

Page 12 (Distance Shooting): Should read: "Three elements of English longbowmen (classed as Bows) ..."

Page 20 : Current text provides: "Since an army needs less than 50 figures, we hope that players will produce armies in opposing pairs or sets rather than fight unhistorical opponents." Although an army comprised of the minimum 12 elements would be hard-pressed to exceed 50 figures, the DBA army lists typically consist of more than 12 element options. Since there are a dozen+ more armies that require more than 50 figures to field all options, then it is perhaps more accurate to say: "Since an army typically needs less than 50 figures,...."

Page 23: Psiloi option in Kassite (I/21b) list is identified as "2x 2P" and should be "2x 2Ps".

Page 26: Chariot option in Kyrenean Greek (I/56a) list is identified as "2x2LCh//4Sp" and should read "2xLCh//4Sp".

Pate 30: Artillery option in Bosporan (II/25) list is identified as "1x 2Ps or Arty" and should be "Art".

Page 35: Mick Woods suggests: ll/70(a) Burgundians "9x3Wb" should read "9x4Wb". In DBM, Burgundians are Irr WB(O), which translates (DBA, p. 5) into 4Wb, not 3Wb.

Page 35: The Palmyran list (II/74) spans 260-273 AD, but sublist (a) is listed as beginning in 60 AD. To correspond to the DBM list, sublist (a) should span 260-271 AD.

Page 38: There is a typographical error on the Welsh list (III/19). The general element alternate is listed as 3xWb instead of 3Wb. The corrected list should read "1x3Cv or 3Wb (Gen), 9x3Wb, 2x2Ps."

Page 39: The III/29 Thematic Byzantine list indicates that II/40 Numidian and Early Moorish is a big battle ally. The Numidian/Early Moorish list ends in 25 AD, whereas the Thematic Byzantine list doesn't start until 650 AD. The correct ally should probably be II/57 Later Moorish, which extends to 696 AD.

Page 40: The III/37(b) Abbasid Arab list contains "...3x6Bw, 2x6Bw or..." DBA2.0's basing rules (page 5) do not not provide for 6Bw and specifies that DBM-style Bow(X) Double-based should be depicted as 8Bw. Since the DBM Abbasid list provides for Reg. Bow (X), the comparable DBA Abbasid list should read: "..3x8Bw, 2x8Bw or...."

Page 44: The IV/3 Anglo Norman list provides for "(1x3Kn//4Sp (Gen) + 3x3Kn//4Sp) or (1x3Kn//4Bd + 3x3Kn//4Bd). You can't have an army without a general, which you would have if you choose the second option. So, the Anglo-Norman list should read: "(1x3Kn//4Sp (Gen)+ 3x3Kn//4Sp) or 1x3Kn//4Bd (Gen) + 3x3Kn//4Bd)...."

Page 41: The III/48 Rus (list provides that the Early Bulgars (III/14a) are a potential big battle Ally. But the Rus list doesn't begin until 860 AD, whereas the Early Bulgar "a" list ends in 674 AD. Assuming Bulgar allies are historically appropriate, the correct Early Bulgar ally should be III/14c.

Proposed Errata

The following proposals to correct possible DBM-DBA translation errors and historical omissions:

Pages 29/30: Stephen Reed (aka Decius) notes the Camillan Romans (II/10) and Early Armenians (II/28b) are listed as mutual enemies. Is anyone familiar with any Roman military expenditions to Armenia before 275 BC? If so, drop me a note.

Page 31: Owen Elliott suggests: "In Polybian Roman (II/33), the ratio of Ps to Bd to Sp is wrong. There should be 1 Ps to 2 Bd, and 1 Sp to 4-6 Bd. So the list should be 1x3Cv(Gen),1x3Cv, 6x4Bd, 1x4Sp, 3x2Ps."

Page 32: Paul Hannah suggests: "One of the opponents for the II/43 Maccabean Jewish, 168-104BC army is II/22b Arabo-Aramaen (Emesa), 51BC-72AD, but the year-ranges do not mesh. I am wondering if, perhaps, there should be a "1" in front of "51BC" (i.e. "151BC")? I'm no scholar on Aramaen city-states, but that would seem to fit the chronological manner in which the individual. city-states are being listed." Chris Brantley adds: "Another solution to the incompatible dates is to make II22(f) (any above if earlier) as the ally."

Pages 34-35: Mick Woods suggests: "Ostrogothic (ll/67b) and Gepid (ll/71). Delete 2Ps, replace with option of 2Ps or 3Bw. Goths used mass archery. DBM Early Ostrogoth list allows up to 60 elements of Irr Bw (I), which translates (DBA, p5) into 3Bw. Gepids allow up to 36 elements of Irr Bw (I)."

Page 36: Mick Woods suggests: "Il/80(a) Attila's Hunnic Army. Why not give it Ostrogothic (ll/67b) and Gepid (ll/71) as Big Battle allies? This would reflect the Hunnic army at Châlons."

Page 37: Nick Huxford suggests: "III/4 b) Early Byzantine - One option is 4Wb. There are no possible 4Wb in the DBM list (i.e. Wb(O) or Wb(S)). The nearest is City racing factions which are Hd(F) which are 5Wb in DBA. Suggest changing "4Wb" to "4/5Wb"."

Page 37: Nick Huxford suggests: "III/5ab) Middle Frankish - Both include 3Wb as options. The only equivalent in DBM is Wb(F) and there are no Wb(F) in the DBM list, only Wb(O) and Wb(S) - both 4Wb. I suggest changing "3Wb" to "3/4Wb"."

Page 39: Andrew Whittaker suggests: "Welsh should be allowed as allies of Middle Anglo-Saxons (III/24b), not just a; they joined forces with Alfred the Great against the Vikings at Buttington in 893 AD."

Page 39: JLogan suggests: "III/29 Thematic Byzantine. 650AD-963AD. This needs to have III/29 (civil wars....), III/30 (Magyars) and III/53 (Dynastic Bedouin) added as enemies for sure. I also think III/13 (Avars) probably also need to be added, though I can not yet verify this absolutely. Obviously, these same lists in turn need to have III/29 added to their list of enemies."

Page 40: Owen Elliott suggests: "III/35(b) Feudal Spanish should have III/74 Fanatic Berber as an enemy, and vice versa, to cover (among other campaigns) the battle of Alarcos in 1195AD (and the 2nd Crusade)."

Page 40: Owen Elliott suggests: "III/34(a) Andalusian has too few Sp. There are a maximum of 15 Cv elements (in generals) in the DBM list, and a minimum of 8 (max of 37) Sp elements, but 2 of each in the DBA list. I would change the number of Sp to 4 and reduce the number of Ps to 4 (that gives each Sp element a supporting archer element). There might be an argument for a separate "Berber" list (as per the notes to the DBM list) which replaces the Cv with LH and leaves the 2 Sp as Negro spearmen or guards."

Page 41: Chris Pagano suggests: "There seems to be no allies listed for list b of III/45 Pre-Feudal Scots. I think it should be something like: A=(b)III/40b,71"

Page 42: Owen Elliott suggests: "III/65 Fatimid has too many Cv; there are a maximum of 13 elements (including generals) in the post 1077 DBM list, and 4-6 elements in the DBA list. The post 1077 DBM list requires at least 12 Armenian archer elements; only 2 are available in the DBA list. I would replace the "1x3Cv(Gen), 3x3Cv" with "1x3Cv(Gen),1x3Cv,1x2Ps or 3Bw,1x2Ps or 3/4Bd" to cover the many different Ps options in the DBM list, the maximum 15 Armenian archer elements (which is only 1 element less than the al-Abid archers, who get 3 double-based elements in the DBA list) and the (mandatory) lutat in the DBM list."

Page 42: Owen Elliot suggests: "III/67b Early Hungarian has too much foot. The DBM list has a minimum of 18 LH (22 from 1050 to 1150) and an optional minimum of 16 Sp; it also has a maximum of 9 Ax (or 5 Ax and 4 Bw depending on which Serb option is taken). I suggest the 2x3Ax or 3Bw option should be changed to "2x3Ax or 3Bw or 2LH""

Page 43: Nick Huxford suggests: III/75 Konstantinian Byzantine - Includes a 4Bw option. The only bow in the DBM list are Bw(X) which are the 8Bw in the DBA list. I think this should be 4Bd - the Menaulatoi or Varangians on the DBM list. I suggest changing "4Bw" to "4Bw or 4Bd"."

Page 44: Nick Huxford suggests: "IV/3 Anglo-Norman - The last element is "1xWWg or 3Cv or 3Sp". In the DBM list these elements represent troops only present in specific cases - fighting the Scots for the WWg and the Welsh for the 3Cv or 3Sp IIRC. Against other opponents none of the options would be permitted. Another lot of 4Sp would be the most likely alternative. I suggest changing "1xWWg or 3Cv or 3Sp" to "1xWWg or 3Cv or 3/4Sp"." Owen Elliott adds: "On IV/3, I endorse the comment about the WWg/3Sp/3Cv option. On "Standard wagons" I would suggest that armies with the option of one WWg(I) in the DBM lists could use a wagon as a baggage element, otherwise it disrupts the balance of the army."

Page 46: JLogan suggests: "IV/31 Nikaian Byzantine. 1204AD-1261AD. Needs to have IV/33 (Epirot Byzantine) and IV/5c (late Sicilian Norman) added as enemies (and vice versa)."

Page 46: JLogan suggests: "IV/33 Epirot Byzantine 1204AD-1340AD. In addition to adding Nikaian as enemies, under its allies, should say "IV/5c AND/or IV/32" instead of currently just " IV/5c or IV/32" , since in a battle in 1252 AD, all 3 fought together (and lost) against IV/31, the Nikaian's."

Page 48: Daniel (aka Janus) suggests: IV/54c Medieval Swedish. There are two historical opponents of Sweden that are not noted as enemies in the army lists. My suggestions for new enemies are: 44b Early Russian and itself (IV54c). Sweden had several conflicts with the lords in Novgorod and later the Tsar concerning areas in Finland and around Ladoga. Wars and raids took place in the years: 1395, 1396, 1399, 1411, 1444, 1448, 1475, 1479-1482 and 1495-1497. Normally these were Swedish conflicts since the Danish (Unionist) troops often had less interest in this relative outback. Also IV54c should have itself as an enemy, since several civil wars and internal conflicts took place during this period. The source to the above is "Medeltidens Svenska Krig" (Medevial Wars of Sweden) by Ulf Sundberg.

Page 48: Daniel (aka Janus) suggests: "IV/54b Kalmar Union. IV54b should probably also have IV/44b Post Mongol Russians as enemies because in the earlier wars unionist troops must have been to some degree present."

Page 48: Daniel (aka Janus) suggests: "In accordance with the above IV54d should also have 44ab Post Mongol Russians as enemies." (Chris Brantley: Isn't IV/54d basically the Norwegians, and would they have fought PMR?)

Page 49: Brian Reddington-Wilde suggests: "IV/68 Medieval Spanish or Portuguese does not have any of their historical allies listed. I believe IV/68a Spain should have has allies: IV/39abc Navarre, IV/64abc France, and IV/68a (two major kingdoms of Aragon and Castile-Leon). IV68b Portugal should have IV/62 England (and/or vice-versa, John of Gaunt twice led an English army to claim the crown of Castile with Portuguese help).

Proposed Changes

The following are reinterpretations and proposed revisions to DBA army lists, including proposals for new army lists:

Page 2: Roberta Bagna proposes: Modify I/2 Early Egyptian (a) as 2x 3Bd or 3Sp and (b) as 3x 3Bd or 3Sp. "In bas-reliefs and sculptures, Ancient Egyptians had units armed with lances and not only blades."

Page 23: Robert Bagna proposes: Modify 1/22 New Kingdom Egyptian (a) as 3x 3/4Bd or 3/4Spr and (b) as 3x 3/4Bd or 3/4Sp. "In bas-reliefs and sculptures, Ancient Egyptians had units armed with lances and not only blades."

Page 31: Roberto Bagna proposes: Modify II/33 Polybian Roman to allow Blade general option - 1x 3Cv or 4Bd (Gen). "In the Polybian period, Roman cavalry had secondary roles. The bulk of army was infantry, to which the generals were often united (even if the general himself, could be to horse).

Page 49: Roberto Bagna proposes: "Extend IV/61 Italian Condotta from 1320 AD - 1495 AD to 1320 AD - 1530 AD to cover the "Italian Wars" period and last wars of the Florentine Republic (against Pisa 1495-1503 and for independence 1528-1530). Add new enemies for Italian Condotta: Spanish Imperial and Neapolitan Spanish."

New Army List: Roberto Bagna proposes: Conquistadores 1500 AD - 1550 AD. Arable if (a), Hilly if (b). Ag 4. E= (a) III/22, IV/11, IV/53, IV/63 (b) IV/72, IV/81. A= (a) IV/19 (b) IV/81. In the (a) list: 1x3Cv = Cortes and bodyguards; 3x3Ax or Bd= Spanish infantry armed with lances or swords and buckler; 3x3Ax = Indian allies (Tlaxcalan and Texcoco); 1x3Cb= Spanish crossbowmen, 2x2Ps= Spanish arquebusiers, 1x5Wb = Spanish wardogs or Indian allies, 1xArt = Cortes small/medium artillery. In the (b) list: 1x 3Cv = Pizarro and bodyguards; 3x4Pk = Spanish pikemen; 2x3Bd = Spanish infantry with swords and buckler, 2x3Ax = Indian allies; 1x3Cb= Spanish crossbowmen; 1x5Wb = Spanish wardogs or Indian allies; 2x2Ps= Spanish arquebusiers. The typology of ground it is the same as the opponents, Aztecs and Incas.

New Army List: Roberto Bagna proposes: Neapolitan Spanish 1495 AD -1530 AD. Arable. Ag 3. E= IV/61, IV/82 (b). A= IV/61, Spanish Imperial. 1x3Kn (Gen), 2x4Pk, 1x3Bd, 2x3Kn, 1x4Cb, 2x2Lh, 2x2Ps, 1Art or 4Cb or 3Bd. List represents: 1x3Kn (Gen) = C-in-C and bodyguards; 2x4Pk = Spanish pikemen; 1x3Bd = Spanish sword and buckler; 2x3Kn = Men-at-arms; 1x4Cb= Spanish crossbowmen; 2x2Lh = Spanish Jinetes; 2x2Ps= Spanish arquebusiers; 1Art or 1x4Cb or 3Bd = Artillery or more Cb or sword and buckler.

New Army List: Roberto Bagna proposes: Spanish Imperial 1519 - 1558 AD. Arable. Ag 3. E= IV/43c, IV/55b, IV/61, IV/79, IV/82 (b). A= IV/61, Neapolitan Spanish. 1x3Kn (Gen), 4x4Pk, 1x3Bd, 2x3Kn or 3Cv, 1x2Lh, 2x2Ps, 1x2Lh or 1Art or 3Bd. List represents: 1x3Kn (Gen) = C-in-C and bodyguards; 4x4Pk = Landsknechts; 1x3Bd = Spanish sword and buckler; 2x3Kn or 3Cv= Men-at-arms or Reiters; 1x2Lh = Spanish Jinetes; 2x2Ps= Spanish and Landsknechts arquebusiers; 1x2Lh or 1Art or 3Bd = Artillery or more jinetes or sword and buckler. Also adjust IV/13 (d) Medieval German from 1479 AD - 1519 AD to 1479 AD -1518 AD; In 1519, when Charles V was elected Emperor and united the thrones of Spain and the Holy Roman Empire, and is represented by the new Spanish Imperial list.
