The hill is carved from blue foamboard. The base of the hill, along with the
stacked stone wall on top are made of kitty litter. The steps were inspired by a
visit to a Thracian/Byzantine/Ottoman fort I visited near Plovdiv, Bulgaria in
2006. These were carved with an X-Acto knife. The whole thing was painted black
then dry brushed with light browns and greys. The flocking at the base is Gale
Force 9 "Autumn Mix".
The figures are conversions of an Essex Greek, an Old Glory archer, and a Xyston
Thracian slinger. They are posed to suggest a desperate defense - throwing
rocks, peering out from behind the wall (both the warrior and his shield), and
turning back while ascending the steps for another shot. I thought about
putting a cart full of rocks on top, being pushed to the edge and ready to roll
downhill on the enemy, but it simply took up too much room!
