The first line of heavy infantry were made up of less experienced infantry.

Princeps

The Principe formed the second line of heavy infantry and were more experienced and better equipped..

Triarii

The last line of the army were the most experienced and best equipped. If these needed to fight it was a bad sign.

Velites

The troops that lead the legions into battle.
