Bob Beattie's Pechenegs (DBA III/47)

The Pechenegs (a.k.a. Patzinik Turks) migrated from the steppes into the region north of the Black Sea between Khazaria and Russ in the late 800s, where they remained until crushed by the Byzantines at Berrhoia in 1122 AD and then absorbed by the Cumans. They are perhaps most famous for refusing an entreaty by a Byzantine Emperor to join in fighting against the Seljuks, giving the following reply: "since the Turks are both numerous and fierce we do not wish to do so, and furthermore we hope that he will be so tactful as never to mention the matter again." The Pecheneg baggage wagons were reputed to have high wooden sides with openings for archery, hence are classified as war wagons.
